Not the usual RROD... (I've got a red cover so removed to make easier to see)

Nope, instead the bloody thing just locks up giving me a lovely pattern on the screen madgrumpy

Thought it was Fable 2 at first, then it did it with Forza 3 and now the Xbox dashboard rage Safe to assume it's fecked? irked

Are you using a HDMI cable? If so, have you tried unplugging/plugging back in or trying another one? I had similar issues and it was HDMI related.

No HDMI on this 360, just component - it's actually one of the first XBox 360s which my brother bought in 2005, so it probably done well to last this long. It's already had the RROD too a few years ago and was sent to Germany to be fixed.

Assuming my eyes don't go first I could try using the AV cable if I've still got it...

Good news is there's an AV cable built into my (unofficial) component cable smile

Bad news is Forza 3 lasted 3 minutes... grumpy

Then in the words of Duncan Bannatyne, 'Ah'm oot' hehe

Hope you get it sorted! (Though Game are doing some good deals on the slim)

Mine went like that too just before the RROD. Brought the heat sink pack and it worked ok for another couple of weeks beforeit failed again.

Just threw it in the bin in the end and got a slim 1 week before they dropped the prices due to the 720 next year.

Strange you mention that...

bd!

Tried the official AV cable and no difference. Guess I've got no choice but to chuck it but has done well for 6 years to be fair.

How much are 360's these days?

If you want to risk it jam the fan in the back with a cocktail stick then boot up the xbox, it will overheat and re-set the solder on the chip that causes the rrod. Switch off after that let it cool down and boot it up again with the fan free.

Did the towel trick with mine - Again, it only went a day or so before the RROD came back.

Mine was about 5 years old too.

Hmm, the first error was E74, graphics error, heatsink I think.

Then to RROD, proper bastardised.

Suppose I could give it a go since it seems knackered anyway.

As mentioned, the first one was E74... I had that on mine with a weird pattern on the screen, then it just plain didn't work. The towel trick helped, for about 10 minutes!

I just bought a new arcade and swapped my hard drive onto it.

Exact same thing happened to me - noticed the weird chessboard look, switched it off and on, RROD.

Towel trick worked for a day or 2 then was fooked - lasted me 3 years - was annoyed, but I suppose if a laptop lasts me 3 years it is doing well, bought myself one of the new, shiny, 250gb built in wireless jobbies now biggrin

Strange you mention it's done well for six years, my SNES is still going strong.

They don't make em like they used to!

Amen hehe Got a Megadrive & N64 which still work thumbup

Must be lack of moving parts & heat generated - all the CD-ROM based consoles I've had in the past (PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, Saturn) have either died or suffered problems as they got older...

I fixed my first one by going to B&Q, getting some screws and washers, then doing away with the x-clamps on the heatsinks. If you unscrew the stanchions on the heatsinks, they leave tapped M5 holes (iirc) which you simply screw the heatsink down using the aforementioned b&q screws. The trick is to find out where the chip has lifted and put more tension on that corner.

Mine worked for a good 6 months or so after doing that fix smile
