Help my Nikon D50 has stopped working

Hi all,

I am new to this site,

I‘m English but live in Italy, and own a Harley Davidson Road King,
I have posted this on my Harley Davidson Forum "HDRCGB" and was told that this is the best place for help with my problem........

So before I attempt to find a Nikon repair centre here in Italy which won't be easy,

I have a Nikon D50 that stopped working for no apparent reason,
The battery symbol is flashing but the battery is fully charged,
The SD card indicator is flashing but the SD card is ok and has been fully formatted and I have tried three different cards all have been used in this camera, plus the security tab has been checked,
Also the menu screen on the rear of the camera isn't working at all, "nothing totally dead".....

However the camera will turn on it auto focuses the flash pops up but it won't take a photo,

I have tried resetting it and still nothing.....

Anyone know what the problem may be? Or perhaps someone I can contact for some professional advice???

I can ship it anywhere if needed,

Try a hard reset because there is a different reset method that only resets a few settings. The hard reset will basically reset every single setting back to default values. On page 120 of the D50 manual. About halfway down the 'A Note on Electronically-Controlled Cameras' paragraph. (You basically push a tiny switch on bottom of camera, and then set the date/time via menu again.)

This sometimes fix such oddities, so it's worth a shot. Doesn't hurt anything other than needing to change all settings back to the way you wanted it after a reset.

Hi Ian sorry for the late reply...

I have done a total reset and nothing changes all stays the same..

There is a photography shop in our village I'll take it to them tomorrow and see if there is a repair shop in the area..

Good grief. Not something one would often find in the UK these days. Ours closed about 15 years ago.

Unless things are very different in Italy there will be very few properly equipped service companies but, as in the UK, a number of local businesses who will take something in and send it away for repair.

I would imagine there is a Nikon Italy web site where the list of official repair centres can be found. If not look for a Nikon Europe web site.

Have you tried a different battery? It's just possible that it's not putting out enough power to fire up all the camera's facilities even though it is reporting as being fully charged. Unlikely but worth trying before sending it away.

Other than that, has it been dropped or dunked recently?

If the battery indicator is flashing after you have "charged" the battery, it is highly likely that the battery has reached the end of its useful life.
A new battery should sort the problem.

The battery symbol is full and flashing the SD card symbol is flashing and there is an SD card in there and the menu screen won't work at all I can't look at photos on the SD card or perform any tasks at all,
But the camera does switch on and auto focus complete with all the bleeps that go with it but it won't take a picture........

The photo shop in our village is nothing special but they do sell cameras so there may be a chance they will know where I can send it for repair,

But I may purchase a new battery first it just may be that that's the problem,
