I don't have a problem with monitoring speed in built up residential areas. What does upset me is blatant revenue earning on clear, open road with artificially low speed limits - motorways for example

This is exactly the opposite effect the specs on the notingham inner ring road have had. yes accidents and speeds on the ring road have dropped, but so has the volume of traffic. where has it all gone on to the residential areas, where accidents and speeds have gone up, although they seem reluctant to anounce this... I agree use cameras etc where there is genuine need, and point them out..This is where the specs is usefull as it is the average between them you need to watch so it slows people down through a trouble spot... rarther than brake brake brake, accelerate... Obviously they don't have the 'Peak' type of camera's in your area, they work off a loop system in the road surface, not radar as GATSO use, your detector will not warn you of these, be aware!!

Geodesy (sp?) doesn't detect anything. INstead it has maps of every speed camera in the country and tells you where they are in relation to you via GPS. You can also get updates or update them via a website. It's a great idea and helps tell you where the blackspots are as well as the stupid, irresponsibly placed cameras are. A great idea but the authorities don't like it as widespread use would mean they can't afford to subsidise your canteen anymore John !! ;-)

Sorry,my mistake heard of the system didn't know its name ,thought you were refering to a type of detector, as opposed to a info system, still think it's risky to rely on it though

Its an interesting point this. Geodesy can only be as good as its database. Does anyone (WITH A PROFILE) have one and reckon its any good.... John, I personally rely on not being a nutter, keeping an eye out for all types of road hazard and (ahem) looking carefully for the coppers! With the way these cameras are springing up everywhere though a little electronic assistance (not to be solely relied on) might be a good idea. A bit like ABS or Traction Control. Very useful assistance: no substitute for careful driving.

I agree - Geodesy relies on people spotting cameras, and pushing a button on the unit, which logs it into the database. I wondered whether it's worth it for me, in S. Yorks - it occurred to me that there aren't as many wealthy types forking out £380 in this area than, say, London - so my local database may be unreliable. Thoughts, anyone? Also, it's true that in S.yorks, (certainly Doncaster area) all the Gatsos have been painted dayglo orange - very badly as well - I thought someone was doing it illegally!!. I reckon a Geodesy is good, but needs back-up for the mobile traps, like Vascar, so get a radr detector also. OOH, expensive!!

I know I got it wrong with a previous post, but nothing can detect VASCAR or a following check, OK its easy if the car doing it has jam butty stripes,or battenburg livery, its then down to obbs, but you are struggling a bit with unmarked cars.

Unmarked cars - generally clean, dull colours, no garage stickers in rear windows and no writing on the numberplate besides the reg itself. Look out for 2-3 aerials and generally no older than 3 years old. Mainly average spec 4 door saloons. remember that and you'll most likely cut your chances of being caught quite a bit. Being vigilant and keeping the eyes peeled, you should be extra vigilant anyway if your speeding!

Not heard of Valentine you will have to explain it,great obbs if I,m 100 yds behind or it's night time, but most speeders are not that observant

The thing is, it is very unlikely you would be behind me without me spotting you first. The idea is see the car, slow down, cruise past slowly and check the car out. Once you are sure it's not an unmarked car you slowly increase the speed back to your safe, comfortable, cruising speed. Once the unmarked car is behind you it is too late. If I was travelling at 90mph on a very ligh traffic motorway I very much doubt you would be 100 yards behind me unless you had joined the motorway before me and had speeded signifcantly just to get behind me. In which case, you would be in the wrong. This is making the point that I join the motorway at the speed limit or less and take into account the conditions and the "risk" before I then decide on my safe speed to travel. Another great tell tale sign is the numbers underneath the registration mark i.e, 000682 or whatever, most seem to have it. Also 2 people in the car usually in white shirts.

Isn't it illegal for a number plate not to display the manufacturers name and a BS mark ???? if so from the previous post it seems most unmarked cars have illegal number plates. Still quote that at the side of the road, watch the steam and await the book being thrown no copper likes a smart ar5e. Just found the form the notes on a V796 from DVLA say this.
