So good to see the voices of moderate, sensible people with great values vying to be leader of the "free" world...

Beeb said:
Seven Republican presidential hopefuls have attacked President Barack Obama's economic record in the first major debate of the 2012 campaign.

The candidates for the party's nomination also focused criticism on his 2010 overhaul of the healthcare system, pledging to repeal "Obamacare".

They refrained from attacking one another, preferring to hit at Mr Obama.

<snip>

Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann, a favourite of the anti-tax Tea Party movement, said she had filed regulatory paperwork to enter the race officially, and criticised Mr Obama's effort to establish a universal healthcare programme.

<snip>

Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty said Mr Obama was a "declinist" who viewed America as "one of equals around the world".

<snip>

When the debate turned to social issues, traditionally a key concern of Republican voters, the candidates said they would support an amendment to the US constitution banning same-sex marriage.

Ron Paul said he opposed one, but added that governments should not be involved in marriage policy at all.

Supporters of the presidential hopefuls gathered outside the debate venue Mr Cain said individual states should be allowed to decide same-sex marriage policy on their own.

Mr Romney and Mr Santorum said they opposed a law passed in December 2010 to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

<snip>

However, a 2010 Pentagon survey of 115,000 service members found that 70% believed the impact on their units would be positive, mixed or of no consequence at all.

Other issues discussed included abortion, immigration and the place of church and faith both in the state and in the life of a president.

<snip>

There is still much speculation about whether former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who has possibly the best name recognition of any of the field, will run for president.

Despite high unemployment in the US, Mr Obama heads most polls against the Republican hopefuls - although a recent ABC-Washington Post poll showed him in a surprise dead heat with Mr Romney.
So basically, they want to continue American dominance of the world, and ban gays from marriage and serving their country in the armed forces. Not so much different to certain beardy types around the world then...

That's from the BBC though -the same organisation that see Obama as the second coming - it makes Fox News look moderate in comparison, regarding bias in this area.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/06/13/gop-whi...

"Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty labeled Obama a "declinist" who views America "as one of equals around the world," rather than a special nation."

"Several praised a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage as between one man and one woman, a position popular among conservative voters"

Or a gay man daring to fight for his country - disgusting!

FFS. It's the 21st Century. Or it is in some parts of the world, the US always seems to be behind when it comes to civil rights.

The 'Don't ask, don't tell' policy allowed gays into the military anyway, they were simply told not make a song and dance about it.

Ron Paul follows the Austrian economic school, which rather disappointingly has nothing to do with Arnie or Schnitzels but more about freeing the market from state intervention and strong libertrian political positions.

He's against America getting involved in foreign wars (Iran, Iraq, Israel, etc) and shutting down lots of US bases abroad. He'd slash the size of the state and therefore massively reduce levels of tax within the US.

Now if you believe in either large state providing military prestige or welfare state then he's not the politician for you.

However he's got 0 chance of being elected. The US will continue with large state supporting politicians until it runs out of people to lend it money.

Well that's rather lovely for Ron Paul, but I did count 7 candidates, of which he was one.

Less government interference? So you approve of the unregulated OTC derivative markets of the noughties that almost finished off the world, where no-one really knew who owed what to whom?

One small policy, but the law of unintended consequences bites pretty hard sometimes.

Finished off the world? I'd have let the market decide which companies should live and die.

Do you think the government can make better judgement about the viability of businesses and organisations than the market?

Why do the Republicans hate homosexuals so much?

Do they think that in the midst of battle someone will get their knob out and attempt to bang it in a comrade's arse?

You know I am quite specifically talking about the OTC derivatives market don't you? How would the market look with no banks left, and no money?

The market is skewed, it doesn't exist for the benefit of society, or protect the weakest, or the minority. Left unchecked, you end up with one big WalMart.

Are any of the candidates calling for homosexuality to be illegal?

Which of the candidates supports the Don't Tell, Don't ask situation?

none of them are saying it should be illegal though i'm sure if they felt it had enough support they'd propose it!

they just dont want gay couples to have the same legal status as straight couples. almost like they want them to be second class citizens for being gay.
