Went out for a ride around the Purbecks this morning... Bournemouth - Lytchett - Sandford - Wareham - East Lulworth - Kimmeridge - Corfe Castle - Swanage - Studland - Sandbanks - Canford Cliffs - Bournemouth
Had an awesome ride and took a few phone shots on top of the MOD firing range at Lulworth.
Not particularly fast, but it was a bit hilly (for me)...
Best bit was that for the first time I didn't walk any of it

I can highly recommend the awesome bacon butties if you're down that way. The climb out of the village is a bit of a killer though

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the UK...
Saw loads of rabbits, baby lambs, two owls (!), some deer, a few squirrels and a fox, as well as a load of road-kill.
Stunning views across Southern Dorset from the top of the Purbecks, just a shame about the climbs to get to see them.

I know that rural Essex doesn't compare to Purbeck, but isn't riding amongst wildlife great? I rode a new route this week, a little ribbon of tarmac between Little Easton and the B1051, west of and parallel with the B184 from Great Dunmow to Thaxted in Essex. The air was absolutely thick with bats. Watching them as they came into view against the lighter sky, then disappeared again against the darker hedgerows had me transfixed. They get so close, dodging and weaving as they chase down their prey. One of the little blighters even brushed my leg as it passed between my arms and the top tube.
I ride some routes regularly, and choose to go out later some nights in the hope of seeing some of my 'regulars', amongst which are a fantastic barn owl, a tawny owl in it's favourite tree, and the mad hares who 'race' me along the fields parallel with the road. The deer can be a bit hairy in the dark. When you spook 5 of them in a field it's OK whilst they run alongside in the field next to you, but when they change direction and cross in front of you, forcing you to brake to a halt to avoid a collision, it can be quite scary, especially as they leap to incredible heights, and those hooves make a lot of noise on the road.
Another thing which makes a lot of noise is badgers. I met one once in the dark, on a single track road, and it isn't easy to make them out in complete darkness by bicycle lights. Them claws make a hell of a racket as they scrabble for grip on the road surface, desperately trying to get back into the woods. There are plenty of other animal hazards on rural roads, not least among them being domestic cats (so unpredictable, and if you hit one, you are coming off).
Back on the subject of Lulworth, it's over 20 years now since I was at the Engineer Wing at Bovington, but it was a lot of fun going down to the gunnery school ranges to make things go BOOM. Not so much fun crawling along the roads from Lulworth Camp at 15mph in a 432, towing a Giant Viper mine clearing hose to get to the ranges though. All of our firing preparation was done at the abandoned village in the middle of the ranges, I think it was called Tyneham. I would love to get back to that area to do some riding. The wife's family are from Bournemouth, but although we go down to the coast regularly, we never seem to get out to the west.

I did the reverse of part of that route at Easter. Starting at Langton (on MTB) towards Kimmeridge (on the coast path) and then up Creech Hill to E. Lulworth and finally Lulworth Cove. The climb up Creech Hill is not trivial although I'm glad I did it from the Corfe side - possibly shorter than from E. Lulworth.
Had a bit of amusement setting off the interactive speed sign in Lulworth though - 41mph!

Some superb riding on Purbeck IMO, I've been over to Wareham a couple of times from here (Weymouth), there is a nice bit of Sustrans route 2 from Moreton to Wareham that is flat, fast and very quiet.
Impressive job getting up the top of the ranges, thats some good climbing, which is somewhat inevitible riding around here- it feels like its all uphill some days :-)

thats a cracking route especially turning off at lulworth and coming down creech hill as fast as you can go , Saw loads of rabbits, baby lambs, two owls (!), some deer, a few squirrels and a fox, as well as a load of road-kill.

another good route if your going to the ferry at studland ,is to turn up the bp gathering station ( private road ) before you get to Corfe and cycle towards M site , theres no traffic and you can take a shortcut which brings you out on the studland road
