couple of evenings recently i've been actually woken up by completely uncontrollable fear, genuine terror. at absolutely nothing. it's gradually going but this morning i found myself waing up with a massive headache and about an hour later uncontrollable tears. not even particularly upset and no real reason, just a bit sad. it was more like a biological reaction than emotion. felt instantly better.

what the hell's wrong with me? none of these are related to anything, they're completely involuntary!

Could be stress related, however I can have night terrors from getting over hot when I sleep. This only tends to happen in the summer. I would go and see a Gp to get the once over.

see, this niht terrors thing isn't me at all. not frightened of the dark, ghosts or any of that ste, but i just kept waking up almost paralyzed with fear and no reason/focus for it whatsoever.

dad's ill atm, could that be it? just seems unlikely though.

The night Terrors thing isn't about "being frightened of the dark, ghosts or any of that" Its waking up in the middle of the night really scared from having a vivid bad dream!

Night terrors aren't about actual fears, they're pretty much what you described so it could be that.

Could possibly be related to breathing issues, do you have asthma or are you a bad snorer?

Talk to your GP, either way it's grim and you shouldn't have to just put up with it.

All the best - mate's 6 year old stepdaughter has them, not nice.

Night terrors aren't known for causing headaches or crying episodes, however. It could be a symptom of some circulation problem, perhaps.

I recall that I had a similar thing happen one time, caused I believe from sleeping in a weird position (sitting up in a packed train carriage, whilst travelling from Athens). I woke up with a fear that can't possibly be described, I thought literally that I would die. I couldn't move a muscle for many minutes although it was daylight and I was surrounded by people I knew. When the journey ended about 25 hours later I found I was so dizzy I couldn't stand up and I felt utterly depressed for a couple of hours. I also had a headache as I remember. Then it just went, never to return. I'm pretty sure the whole thing was because of my sitting / sleeping position causing an obstruction with circulation or something.
