A huge police search has been abandoned after a false tip from a psychic that the bodies of 30 children were buried in a neighbour's back garden.

The FBI was called in, joining 15 car loads of local police officers, sniffer dogs and a helicopter, to scour the area in Liberty County, Texas, after the dramatic call was made this afternoon to authorities.
Absolutely incredible. Are people really that fking moronic? At first I thought they investigated a report that just happened to come from a 'psychic', but reading the report and listening to the news it sounds like they actually acted on some vision she had and she provided no evidence.

And I love how they use the word 'psychic', like it means something. They might as well say they were acting on a tip from a fairy or a magic unicorn. To be honest I'm really hoping to be proved wrong and find out that a massive search was actually based on some evidence, because otherwise I'm living in a world inhabited by people even more stupid that I'd previously given credit for, and that's saying something.

In the "benefit of the doubt" department for the police (and from the article)

- police receive tip (some deranged idiots do go to "phsychics" and use them as confessionals which is where some psychic tips come from)

- home is that of a registered sex offender

- human blood found at home

I would say an amount of follow up was worthwhile. I imagine that this particular tipster will now be relegated to the "crank tipster" drawer in the local PD.

I may be wrong but the way it was reported I think the blood was discovered after the huge mobilisation of police. I can't see any reports of evidence provided to the police before the search began. The reports say that it was the unfounded allegation of 30 dead kids that promted the search.

Apparently more than one call. Also, they initially didn't know who the tipster was and the details called in by the tipster seemed to match the area. Started off with a Sheriff's response and then escalated after the initial Sheriff response on the scene...

I am sure that prior to the initial response the Sheriff's department ran a report on the property to see who lived there. Chances are that the tip was given more attention when it came back as the home of a registered sex offender.

Only one caller, though - the 'psychic', apparently she made several calls. Also, she said was a 'psychic' from the get-go (to use an Americanism) but didn't give her name.

Got to love it, though, she was accurate about the layout of the house but not quite so accurate about the 30 dead bodies.

Curious that said psychic had a vision of the bodies but not of the events leading up to their killing. Surely if you were psychic, you'd be able to call the police with a prediction of the crime before it happened, rather than just being able to tell them where the bodies were?
