Insurance time, Manning have quoted me around £250 more than MSM - however they include trackday cover which is useful.

Problem is, the events I've asked about specifically they haven't answered conclusively.

The events that I'm currently planning to attend are:

Car Limits activity day - "Such an event does not usually fall under our Track Day wording, as they are not Track Days. We can agree to cover certain driver training events, however each one would be looked at on a case by case basis to confirm whether it can be covered. Overall if we feel the course would be of benefit, and improve your ability then we should be ok. If we feel it is not really of benefit (sprinting, drifting etc) then we are unlikely to cover."

Charity Driving (passenger ride) Days (Bruntingthorpe etc) - "Charity days are another that we would need full details of before we can confirm whether we can cover these. We have done in the past for certain cases. For any happening on Track we would want full details of the safety arrangements in place, how many vehicles are on track at a time etc."

Since I'm unlikely to get these full details before the policy falls due for renewal, I'm reluctant to pay an additional £250 for potentially no benefit.

Does anyone else have experience of the Manning cover and the above scenarios?

I'm with Mannings and they've previously confirmed the Car Limits handling day was covered (at North Weald aerodrome). biggrin

By track day cover, they really mean days organised by certain reputable providers/organisers who are registered to one or two certain standards.
Remember that their track day cover has an excess of £1000, which is fine for total loss, but a slight 'coming together' will have to come from your own pocket!

still nice to know you have some cover, even with that excess

I am insured with Manning and I find they are a little more expensive however you get some great benefits:

  • Agreed Value
  • 45 days Euro Cover
  • TVRCC and ATDO track day cover.
  • I have a representative assigned to my account who I can phone up and ask for by name, the same person who sold me the policy and has made all the amendments.
I would have thought they would cover a Car limits day as they give insurance discounts for those who have undertaken then. I need to call them this week anyway as I need to extend my limited mileage from 5k to 7k so I will ask the question then.

I have the TVR and the Porsche with them, good company to deal with and no more expensive than others for me. Never had to claim so don't know what they are like with that end of the business, which is the most important. I have been with SAGA and they were most horrendous to deal with when claiming.

Been with them for a few years now best price for my age group by far and track day cover is handy as well.

I stand corrected. I spoke with Manning today and they stated the Car limits and other driver training activities are excluded from their track day policy.

I'm still pretty puzzled about which way to go.

The type of events I intend to do (Charity airfield days & Carlimits training) are not included, so it's not worth the extra.

However, it's always handy, just in case I decide to do a track day...

I know what you mean.... the thing that swings it for me is the fact I do at least 2 TVRCC track days a year so in my case it was worth it. However in your case it is a lot extra to pay on the off chance that you may do a track day. I do also like the fact that Manning are a small brokerage and are very good to deal with.

I know insurance companies want to mitigate risk as much as possible hence why their track day cover is very specific, but it is a shame that they cannot be a bit more sensible over events like charity days and driver training events. rolleyes

I have been with Mannings for years and am utterly happy with them. I have had to make a couple of claims and they've been trouble free which reflects well on them as brokers and the underwriters and insurers that they choose to do business with. I'm always happy to recommend them to anyone I know and a few years ago I transfered my retail business (non car related) insurance to them as well. They may not be the absolute cheapest but they are competitive and are professional which for me is more important than saving a couple of quid at renewal time.

Correct there is a track excess of £1000....in addition to your road excess, probably £500.

That said, I had a track claim with Mannings and it was the easiest, most painless claim ever.

Recommend and still with them despite being more expensive than others.

My understanding is that they run two different types of days. One a "Training" day and the other an "Activity day". My understanding is that the Training days are for small numbers (3-4) and you are provided with a certificate upon completion. The Activity days do similar activities but in much larger numbers (25-30) and a certificate is not provided upon completion.

I can confirm that we are ok to cover the Training days, and will look to give a discount on premium upon receipt of a copy of the certificate.

We will not offer any cover for, or give discounts for anyone taking part in the Activity days.

With regards to charity days in my experience these can differ so much from one to the other, so we would really want each one to be referred to us with full details of what it involves and we would consider on a case by case basis. We are normally flexible when it comes to these, but each will be considered on its own merits. I cant see us having a problem with people giving passenger rides on the road in return for a donation, it is when it becomes track driving that we would need to know what safety procedures are in place. Unfortunately our recent experience of parade laps and these types of events have not shown things to be as low risk as we had been lead to believe.
For reference.

Ultimately, for the events I plan to do, they will probably not be covered - hence the £300 premium is no longer worth it.

Back to MSM it is! Just need to decide if I want to pay £80 to protect my NCB (and have £100 added onto excess at same time) - I'm thinking yes.
