I think a more apt name would be Dr Compassion.

I think it it disgusting that we have to watch our nearest and dearest struggle for every breath yet we can take the pain away for man's best friend.

I have no idea why no politician is brave enough to support assisted sucide.

I can't see it being a vote loser

I (and any half intelligent person) agree with you, unfortunately the masses of "Hard of thinking/the media is always right" brigade would be up in arms about it.

There is only one possible downside to assisted suicide.

That it may be used to hasten the end of life of somebody for inheritance reasons.

I'm sure it could be such a robust process so as to rule this out.

And I can see that happening A LOT!

I work with lots of elderly people with money (IHT consultant) and I can well imagine the poorly ones being slipped a leaflet on "options" if they were legal.

I'd still agree with it.....but needs careful legislation.

Good film on Dr Death on TV a while ago, Al Pacino and John Goodman.......very good.

Easy

You decide to top yourself then a higher rate of inheritance tax which will stop the truely greedy relatives

And if you want to top yourself but not leave your surviving relatives crippled with inheritance tax?

The "simple" answer would surely be legal affirmations, drafted when compos mentis, that you would like your life ended in certain circumstances.

Exactly, a robust system like wills where you make the decisions way before you are wrecked.

Assisted suicide could prevent lots of pain and suffering and be the interests of those who want it. After all, who are we to tell those who wish to die that they must stay alive and suffer!?!?

Now that foxhunting is banned, couldn't we pop them in a fur coat and have them run around the countryside a bit on all fours?

Win win IMO.

Think of it as an early contract release fee.

Bit like a mobile phone contract without the call centers

Its win/win situation for the government.

Less not quite dead people hanging around the NHS and a tax bonus.

Seriously dude think it through, you will end up with poor people suffering because they don't want to cost their kids money.

And Eric, I don't see it as the thin end of anything, it is your own personal decision, what do you think it is the thin end of? Mandatory suicide?

Which is an improvement of the situation with poor people suffering because they haven't got any choice.

And i'd far rather have mandatory topping before you get expensive to keep alive then 5 years in agony lying in a puddle of my own piss

Yes but then it is a two tier system, the poor continue to suffer because they can't afford to die.

As far as mandatory goes, I'll ignore that comment as "unable to distinguish humour" via the communication of text. I'm sure it was meant to come over as funny but it really didn't.

It is the risk of family manipulation that worries me. There are enough cases of family and aquaintances bumping off elderly people as it is without the law giving them a helping hand.

I just think it is dangerous territory to go down.
