Hi guys,

Sorry to be a serial poster with my newbie questions but hey...

1) Forks - I know they're RockShox Recon Solo Air fork but I have no idea whether they're TK, Gold, Race etc... How do I tell? I've googled the spec of the bike for hours and all I can find is RockShox Recon Solo Air fork.

2) Front Mech - Halfords site states it should have an X7 front mech, my bike has an X5... should I be bothered about this?

3) Pedals - This is bothering me... It's advertised with "Alloy Platform" and pictured with DMR replica type platforms. Halfords sell "Alloy Platforms" which look like DMR's but I have crappy Steel Cage pedals.

I've obviously accepted the bike and signed for it, do I have any come back now??? It's left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth if I'm honest, I just wondered if I phone them and start moaning if I have a leg to stand on?

Sorry again guys... I'm just getting a bit annoyed with Halfords now!

I don't know anything about retain law but given that you've only had it for a few days, I would certainly turn up at their shop with your receipt and ask them to comment on these points. You have to at least give them the opportunity to rectify things.

Where possible print out the pages from the websites you were investigating too.

I was a bit annoyed so thought, bks and called them... I think I'm most annoyed about the pedals (as tight as that sounds as I would have upgraded them anyway, but atm I don't even want to ride it with the things it has on there) as the bike is pictured with ok looking pedals and listed in the spec!

I've printed the spec out.

They're going to "investigate" and call me back, which I laughed at as he looked on the internet whilst I was on the phone and obviously realised at that point I was correct!

Take it in and ask why this has been downgraded a level, and ask to have the X7 put on.

XX>X0>X9>X7>X5

Ask for them to chuck in the pedals to cover your inconvenience of getting the right front mech sorted.

Yeah I knew the X5 was a drop down, is the X7 much better???

I'm really annoyed about this now... on top of the brake levers being at different angles, them not pumping the forks up properly... it's just annoying!

i will be surprised if you can tell the difference between x5 annd x7, particularly on the front mech but its the principle so its worth mentioning. OEM pedals are always poor, dmr replica alloy platofrms or not. personally, i wouldnt get to bothered about it. you are probably going to want to upgrade them to genuine dmr or spds soon anyway?

sounds like the cobbled a bike together with spare parts or something. very surprised but these things happen, it may have even been sold in error?

Hi mate,

Yes it's principle!

To be told the bike doesn't come with pedals and they chucked them in as a favour when it's advertised on the internet including pedals which would have done me for a few rides until I upgraded to DMR's just annoys me.

The bike was a display model from 2010. When I first looked at it, it was missing the front brake. They ordered a new one and fitted it before I picked it up. I'm just annoyed that I have now noticed the front mech isn't what was advertised.

If it was only the pedals I wouldn't have gone back to complain (I already moaned when I picked it up) as I intended on upgrading anyway... now the front mech is different as well I've complained about both... I'll let you know what happens!

Bike radar review suggests it has an X5 front mech and X7 rear mech, i'd believe this over halfords website. The forks are most likely an oem model of the recon, my reba's are an oem version i purchased from merlin and are refered to as reba sl.

I wouldn't let the pedals put you off, just upgrade to some proper DMR's or equivalent flat pedal.

Dont let these niggles put you off the bike, they are cracking bikes! Enjoy!

Small print probably says errors and omissions excepted

Manufacturers specifications change on bikes all the time, even mid season.

All of the Boardman range have the front mech one grade lower than the rear.

Mine has X0-X9, the Team has X9-X7 and the Comp has X7-X5.

Buy the pedals you want and be happy that you have bought a really good spec bike for a real bargain.

If its a display model then I'll bet it hasn't had the pedals fitted to it on the display stand, come time to pdi it and the original pedals have been lost. They should've put something comparable to the originals on it tho. Don't worry about the mech, as others have said you wouldn't notice the difference anyway.

As yours is a 2010 model, I am guessing the Halfords site is displaying the 2011 model which has the X7 upgrade? And maybe the 2010 had different pedals to the 2011, hence that difference...

Just a guess mind :-)

It's a Rock Shox Recon SL Air front fork.

Mine has an X5 front mech and came with some Wellgo pedals that are OK for the time being, beats spending £75 on some alternatives, they are all metal with some nobbles on them. A lot better than some manufacturers provide.

Halfords are cack, just take the bike to a decent bike shop, get rid of the Speed King tyres and enjoy it.

Its a cracker of a bike for the money, imagine yours was around 500 as it is last years model now, which is a steal.

It's the 2010 spec I'm looking at on their website! The 2011 bike is White!

I've not heard back from them, tried to call them earlier and was on hold for 5 mins so gave up. I'll see if they come back to me.

I think I was just annoyed and I had to say something to get it off my chest... I'm not good at brushing things under the carpet so to speak!

I'm not gonna let it bother me, I'm happy with the x5 front mech, it must just be a mistake on their website.

The pedals have annoyed me, but hey, I've chilled out a bit now. V8's will be going on at the weekend after seeing the state of my mates V12's... His bushes sound awful and he's said I'm better of getting the V8's.

He also gave me a new 185 rotor, I just need a spacer for the front. Not sure if this is worth it though.

Pumped up the forks and they're now spot on. Need to mess around with the rebound and also get used to the noise of them!!!

I'm gonna treat myself to some 661 gloves, 661 shin pads and some 661 shorts. Maybe the 661 shoes. I love having all the same brand!

Looking forward to going out on it properly and bedding in the brakes to see what they're like before going out with my mate, his brother and sisters boyfriend all with the circa £4000 full suspension beasts! At least I'll be kicking their arses whilst climbing!!!!

Lol, I'm known as 'sponsor boy' so I'm used to it! The 661 stuff looks ok and I like the veggie shin guards.
