Hi All,

Recent Tam owner, mechanically very interested but relatively uneducated.

I've tried google and the search function here.

What the b'jesus does a swirl pot do and how does it do it?

Many thanks

It's like a mini fuel tank whcih stops the engine suffering from fuel starvation under hard cornering (I think).

If you mean the swirl pot in the cooling system, it is supposed to prevent the build up of air: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...

Roughly it removes air from the coolant to stop air locks forming in the system which if left could cause your engine to overheat. If the air in the swirl pot achieves a certain pressure (c15 psi)then it vents through the vent line to the pressure cap which releases the air /coolant to bring the pressure back down below the nominal 15 psi.

I believe that race cars have swirl pots in the fuel tank so that returned fuel goes into the tank smoothly without taking lots of air with it.

Someone will now correct me smile

An example of how they work, take an empty wine bottle, fill with water and upend over the sink, the water glugs out and takes ages.

Now do the same again, but as soon as you have upended it give it a circular motion to swirl the water inside and see the difference

perfect, thanks guys. i thought it was fuel related, but it seems the trev's swirl is for the cooling!

which explains its location, which would have been my next question, if it was fuel tank related!

thanks!!
