i just found out that the tracker i had installed on my 512tr is no longer viable because the company who installed it (skynet) has gone bust ! great ! so now i need to get another one installed and the prices are staggering. the cheapest is tracker 'receive' for £269 and £99/yr, but this is not gsm; the cheapest gps/gsm system is from rac trackstar at £465 and £120/yr. does anybody have any other cheaper system to suggest?

I'm afraid I can't recommend a cheaper "tracker" style system but I can recommend one that *works*. TRACKER - the original, the best.

I have the "Horizon" GPS/GSM system and it really does work. My Boxster has had a bit of a hiccup (oh c**p what have I admitted to now....Greg don't read this!) and went to AFN on a Low Loader.

Sure enough even though the alarm was turned off I had a call from Tracker (within moments) saying my car has the engine turned off but was moving and was on its wasy to Reading...did I know and did I want it brought back?

Excellent. Of course the car was just on its way for a bit of TLC but if someone had been nicking it 1) I'd have been aware and 2) the cops *would* have been able to find it.

Absolutely brilliant.

Shirley that's what GPS is for ? I can't imagine Tracker saying that once a stolen car leaves the UK mainland, then their interest in it ceases. Although I can't say for sure - Mrs Greg arranged the Tracker fitting at the dealership before we got the Boxster - I don't know what package she went for in the end. I passed on Don's advice to her and let her get on with it.

We did have a similar experience to Don though, if only to prove it works. When they low loaded the car down from Liverpool they were pulled over on the M62, with Plod asking why they were moving the car

actually none of the current tracker systems work on the continent. surprised me too. however, they intend to get it working before year end, but only for those w/ gsm capability. (which means tracker 'receive' and 'monitor' that work on fm based system won't work on the continent for quite a while.)
in the meantime, my insurance broker actually returned my call and proposed a subsisidized system from chubb which comes in at £389. best price so far.....

The system is Tracker Horizon: and is the latest updated version. As I understand it uses the GSM mobile phone system to communicate between the car and the Tracker service so it *should* be possible to use the system outside of the UK? I'm not sure if Tracker actually have the deals in place to enable this to work...in fact I think they don't.

And of course. I could be wrong... ? ?? ???

I think I paid about £900. Which is a one-off payment (lifetime subscription - or at least as long as you own the car...)
