I'm trying to recruit somebody for a company that I'm starting up at the moment, and the skill set that I'd like is very similar to the skills that game developers tend to have. 3d / Java / Lua skills are pretty core to what I'm looking for.

So does anybody have any suggestions as to where to look for these kind of people?

I don't work in gaming but I'm pretty sure most games are written in C/C++ (the games you play on your Xbox/PS3). Java is used for some MMORPG games like RuneScape, Minecraft is also written in Java. Depends what you are doing I guess.

I did for about 10 years, most of the stuff is written in C

I'd wait a few weeks for graduation as there will be loads of new programmers, some of the less scrupulous companies I worked for got rid of people around graduation and employed nice shiny graduates on much less money.

or you can look here http://www.gamesindustry.biz/ they have a recruitment section.

LinkedIn is big for games people now, I'd get something on there if possible.

This thread is probably best for the "Jobs & Employment Matters" section because there's pllllenty of programming guru's hanging around there that are very helpful indeed. On the other hand if you'd asked for Game Testers then I'm sure there's 1 or 2 around this section that could help out ha ha.

It is and it isn't smile

We are trying to stay away from agencies at the moment due to the costs, but if we struggle we'll talk to them

I do...

I'm a 3d vehicle artist, so have a great excuse for browsing this site whilst at work tongue out

It's a very interesting industry, but not one you get into for the money. Typicaly people can have very specialised skills but they're often not recognised, even if we are struggling to find more available talent in the uk wink

I work in games dev. Are you looking for 3D and Java/Lua skills in the same person? Hopefully not, as they're completely different areas! We use C++ for code and 3D Studio Max for 3D (although some other studios use Maya) - these are pretty standard across consoles and a lot of PC titles, so you wouldn't really be looking at console developers.

That said, I'd agree with the LinkedIn suggestion - join the right groups, see who's up for being contacted for job offers and go from there...

What platform is it on? Java+3D+LUA is a kinda strange mix for the target, but I guess for custom dev/edit tools they would work.

(ex- Team17, but on the hardware side)

It's our own software. It's not gaming, but it's real time broadcast graphics, think sports and light entertainment to see what we do.

Essentially we have control software and our graphics engine. The control software uses JavaScript, the engine uses Lua as an internal scripting tool and it's 3d. So you can see why I have such an 'odd' list of requirements.

Another company I worked for who had similar requirements had a good success in recruitment within the gaming industry as they seemed to have the right skills for what we need.

I'm going to give LinkedIn and speak to a few consultants who have been in touch.

Of course I'm realistic enough to understand that I'm not going to get ever skill I need, but being optimistic is always a good starting point!!
