£20 MTB platform pedals

What are the best pedals on the market just now around this price?

I pick my bike up on Wednesday and it comes with SPD's, my mates bike doesn't have any at the moment so he is having my SPD's and he is buying me some platforms.

So - suggestions please

Another vote for the DMR V8's. Had mine for years and they've been perfect.

V8's are good but V12's are noticeably better IMO and are £35 at Evans ATM. Bargain IMO, worth the extra £10.

I've had mine for about 8 years and when I dug my bike out for a ride a few months back they still felt sublime.

I fitted a set of Wellgo MG-1's to my bike. They're made of magnesium so are very light, grippy as hell and they look the mutts nuts in white.

Think mine were closer to £30 than £20 though...

V8s allow you to pump fresh grease into the bearings (good), but only 1/2 the pins are replaceable (bad)
V12s run on bushings on the inboard which wear horribly (bad), but all the pins are replaceable (good).

If it were me I'd amass another £20 (double, yes, I know...) and source some Shimano MX30s.

Yeah they're SPD's so you clip your shoes in to them.

Shorly clip type arent beat for MTS. What happens if you need the exit the bike in a rush at any point?

You'd be amazed how easy it is to unclip at speed, and how difficult it is to unclip when you're doing 1mph and falling over...

Do pins really wear out/get bashed off? The original Shimano DXs were still fine on my BMX after 8 years of virtually daily abuse.

Really? I didn't know they only had one genuine bearing. These are sold at a higher price than the V8s too. Makes me glad I bought the V8s for my new BMX.

When I was considering those MX30s for the Skyway, everyone said to use the V8s. Has anyone actually compared them?

Plenty of people have compared them, the Shimano pedals are better but more expensive. Need to run the long pins in the Shimanos.

Better why? The details about about the V12s not having a bearing at both ends... that's the sort of thing that allows me to make my mind up. But why are the Shimanos better than the V8s?

I like the look of those Wellgos. I like that the end cap is inside the "cage" part of the pedal and so is protected. Another design feature that allows me to compare. I didn't know about those when I bought the DMRs but I would certainly have given them the time.

Re pedals, I've used DMR V8s for years and like them: easy to maintain if they need it, grippy, cheap. Only downside if I find them quite thick and hence not the most efficient: my foot "rolls" aroud the pedal due to the distance from the axle, plus I occasionally whacked them on the ground. I'm now using Superstar Component Nano Flat pedals @ ~£40 and they're even better: very thin, very grippy, and in loads of colours. They're the same pedals as Kona Wah Wah, Nukeproof and various others, and I think someone else brands them as something else and sells them <£40 too. Worth stretching to IMO.
