I watched 'The Cinderella Man' over the weekend (courtesy of BBC2) - it's a film that had originally passed me by and I really enjoyed it. It had good fight scenes, captured perfectly the Depression-era setting, and Crowe is very good.

It got me thinking about other boxing films.

'Raging Bull' and 'Rocky' (the first one) are highly regarded and rightly so, 'The Fighter' picked up good reviews but I was a bit disappointed, primarily due to Bale's 'look at me' overacting in every scene.

Any thoughts, and any recommendations?

The Hurricane, not exclusively a boxing film, more a film about a boxer worth a good 9/10

I can't watch boxing films, the fights are ridiculous.

Here is a real match:

Now here is Rocky Vs Ivan Drago

Note how Rocky blocks most of the punches with his face right from the beginning then the Russian superhero does the same thing later on. Its stupid, when a heavyweight boxer lands a clean shot like that this is usually what happens:

Then don't watch thembiggrin I have read Rocky 3 is the only one to show defensive boxing, regardless of that boxing films aren't just aboot the bouts.

I love Rocky and Rocky Balboa, Rocky 2 is quite good and III and IV are fun.

There's a good film called Midnight Sting, and also a cheapie one that I saw recently with Ving Rhames (as a Tyson character) and on Cheadle which was ok.

Million Dollar Baby was ace.

Yeh! London Prize Ring Rules.

The training sequence in Rocky IV is ace, when he does those leg lifts on the bench!

The Hurricane is a good film, good story behind it. Also Ali, the Michael Mann / Will Smith biopic is very good. Will Smith desrved an Oscar for that performance.

Yes a good documentary, and one hell of a fighter in his prime. I can remember jumping out of my seat when Bruno stunned him with a punch in their first fight, but it wasn't to be. An incredibly intimidating character, and he's had quite a life, how can anyone get through $200M+ and end up broke? I didn't know about the huge bust-up with Don King, and if Tyson had raped Desiree Washington I think he would have owned up to it by now, he was very open about the other things he'd done. According to Wiki he lost one of his kids recently, too.
Don King (allegedly) "stole" most of Tyson's money. Or Tyson signed a contract without reading it.

I've decided to show my lad just how good the Rocky's are, so we've just finished the 1st one after I forced him to watch it ha ha. He wasn't too impressed & tbh I remember it to be much better BUT I know for sure the next 4 only get better and better.

Has anyone seen Gladiator? (the boxing one of course) I seen that film when it came out and thought brilliant.
