Steam Recommendations

I've just bought a new computer and i'd quite like to see what this Steam business is all about.

I've been a console only man for quite a few years now sampling most of the big budget games on the 360 so I'm looking for recommendations for the non-console type games i've probably missed out on, strategy stuff or anything for that matter.

I play Call of Duty 2 and 4 online, 4 for the modern weapons etc and 2 because there are less cheating barstewards.

Oh and I can recommend Minecraft for something completely different and addictive.

If you havent played the Half-Life Series defo worth playing HL2, HL2 EP1, HL2 EP2.

Have you played Mass Effect 2? If not you should get it immediately, but probably from game or amazon rather than steam because it's £9.99 from there. I've just started playing The Witcher 2, which is PC only and available on steam, and that is very good too as long as you have a fairly decent graphics card to run it.

Any good C&C type strategy games about at the minute?

Civilization 5 is not too bad, now that they have fixed the bugs.

There is a genre section on steam, so you can find the type of games you like, most have demos too.

Dawn of War series are good RTS games, the original is massed troops the v2 is more squad/hero based.
Total War series - Shogun2 is the latest
Supreme Commander is also supposed to be good.
I've been enjoying Anomaly:Warzone lately a sort of reverse tower defense game.

Have a look under strategy, loads of games in there.

Portal is also worth checking out if you've not tried it. And I have just finished Amnesia:Dark Descent an FPS horror game which had some genuine shivers and scares in it (you don't have a weapon and can only run away) I actually hid in a cupboard at one point.

At the moment I play L4D one and 2, Portal 2, Supreme commander 2 (C&C type game) and Battlefield Bad Company 2.
Steam is evil though - I'll get in on a Friday night and there will be another special offer (sometimes as low as £1.49) for a game. My steam library is getting close to how my old 8 bit games collection used to look.

Speaking of how evil Steam is, how good are the Prince or Persia games as they are on special at the moment (75% off).

Forget all that, I have almost 100 games on Steam now, but only play World of Tanks now (not on Steam) - download that and say goodbye to everything else!

Might be a good chance to play the original Deus Ex before Human Revolution comes out. Darwinia is a good game, as is Uplink (you buy them both as a pack for £5.99) and Fallout 1 and 2 are worth a play.

Just got Far Cry for £1.50. Not a game I would probably have ever bought now that it's a bit old but at £1.50 it's worth a punt.

Me too, bargain.

Missed out on it 1st time around, got the sequel and hated it but I understand they are very different game.

P.S. FC2 is also on offer at £2.50, at less than the price of a pint it's worth a punt if you like free roaming sandbox type games. They should have ironed the bugs out by now as well.

There are some downsides to steam .. because of the way it patches games I am now having to download 9.4GB for The Witcher 2 Patch 1.1. 9.4GB for a freaking patch, are you kidding me?? The patch is about 15MB but steam requires you to overwrite the entire pack0.dzip file which is absolutely enormous.

If you’ve never played Oblivion I would get that, you can get the full pack with all the DLC for £19.99 (I have it on my wishlist hoping it will be on offer some time). When you’ve finished that get Fallout 3.

One thing I like though, is that I always get full speed when downloading, usually over 1meg/s so even big files don't take that long.
