Is the new sender close enough to the teeth of the pickup wheel. The gap has to be really small, I was quite surprised at how small really.

As little as possible but no more than a few thou.
I believe its illegal to drive without a working speedo.

Speaking from a Tuscan experience, we are talking about mm. I only managed to slide a thin card in between to clean the gap.

If its the same as the Chim speedo set up I have just been through this and (using Steve Heath's replacement sensor kit) diagnosed the head being at fault. I sent it along to Speedy Cables on 16th April and am awaiting its return along with my Rover P5 Speedo

Erm, Yes!

It's bad enough missing out on all this good weather for a month but if it was over a year I'd have bene down there and collcted it long before now.

They can often take a little longer than customers might like. I would suggest a call to them might help them get speedy.

Already done that. WAs told 20 working days turnaround and today is 20 working days since they received them (Damn Bank Holidays).

I have seen posts on the Cobra forum that someon ehas been waiting 12 weeks.

I need the speedo back now as the Chim is out of MOT and I can't MOT it without one.

Is speedy cables really the only place that can sort out problems like this? All i have ever heard about them is how the service speed doesn't quite live up to the company name...

Just received a call, 24 hours excatly after my enquiry and have been told that the earliest it will be is the end of next week before they are sent back.

So much for their 20 working day turnaround - which is piss poor anyway and not advertised on their website

I'd follow it up with an email - pleasant tone etc but just to confirm the date they have provided and to stress the importance to you (and the events to date). That way you have started a log and are hopefully ensuring you stay top of the pile.

Good idea. A factual log to date and expressing my disapointment but optimistic of a 'speedy' turnaround.

Years ago, my 1989 S2 TVR speedo had a problem, so the garage I went to, sent off to Speedy Cables as they were the specialists....
They had 3 goes, and it seemed to take a long time. It never did work properly, in the end the garage made one up out of mine and a spare speedo they had.
They must be doing something right to keep going, but interesting to see the same sort of threads of what happened to me posted after all these years.

Dont forget that there is a pulse converter on Chims between the pick-up and speedo

A very simple device, but is prone to failing with dry joints. I have had this device fail on two different cars.

Previous history on one of my cars showed 5 replacement pick-ups and 3 attempted pairs to the speedo!!! It took me 1 hour or so to find the real fault

Not sure if this applicable to other models (Cerb yes) though.

The issue my car has is that the speedo can sometimes stop working after i have been driving for about an hour/60 miles. Not sure if it is partially heat related as it seems to happen more in the summer.

I have a sheet in my car where i have written down what RPM = what speed in what gear as the rev counter still works when i get the fault so i can know how fast i'm going!

It's a bit intermittent and only generally happens on long runs on warn days so not too much of a problem. I have tried cleaning and checking the gap on the sensor but it made no difference. Where is the bit inbetween located? Would rather try that before testing the speed of speedy cables!
