fuel guage sender

my s1 fuel guage has packed up. have cleaned up the terminals to no avail, so am thinking the sender is gone, are they easy to get hold of, or is there another line of investigation first? thanks

I managed to fix mine when it packed up. First make sure its the sender, if you take the wires off and connect them together the gauge should read full, if not then the fault is elswhere.
I found that the soldered joints on mine had gone so I resoldered and its been ok for the last year. you can see the two joints in the pic. on the left hand side of the circuit board.

I also bent the contacts a bit to make sure they were touching the tracks.

Replaced mine (the samen one as in the picture) with a Land Rover one, part nr PRC 8822. Resistance range is the same. Just the metal wire needs some bending.

confirmed its the sender by touching terminals, thanks again. now how do you get the bloody thing out, and more importantly..... back in?

Should be easy; jack up and remove rear nearside wheel. You should see the sender on the side of the tank. On my car it was held by one of those 3-pronged thingys that you tap round a few degrees until it comes off, and then just thread the sender out...all low tech stuff and quick to do.

And a PITA to get fuel tight, managed it with some red hermatite ib the end. The retaing ring and seal is also landrover

Bit of additional info on new parts: Landrover have stopped manufacturing the original fuel sender. However the well known Triumph/Landrover etc supplier Rimmer Bros can supply a reproduction part from an aftermarket supplier. I am assured (I have just ordered one) that the part is identical. There is however some question about how long Rimmers will be able to get them. Do NOT go for the Landrover alternative part ref 4510P as shown in Landrover parts lists.
Rimmer Bros can be contacted on 01522 568000. Still use the same part numbers; PRC8822, ARA 1501 and ARA 1502.
Cost, including delivery and VAT, is £24.48

I agree with Norman that some form of petrol prof sealant is also likely to be necessary if you are using an old tank which is likely to be a bit corroded round the sender mounting.

.... and be careful if you need to clean up the flange - a wire brush causes sparks
