Very low flying, slow moving plane (Warwickshire late 17/05)
Discussion
Heard an almighty noise outside last night (11:05pm) so looked out of the window and could only see lights, but there was what seemed like a very large slow moving, aeroplane. It sounded like it was propellor rather than jet and was very, very low. So low and slow moving we were concerned it was about to crash.
We do have a number of airports fairly close by at Coventry and Birmingham, but we are south of Southam and planes going to either of these are generally a lot higher than this one, if over us at all.
Anyone got any ideas what it might have been, is there any way of finding out? Hercules perhaps?

Hercules are quite stunningly quiet aircraft, I live on the Quantock hills near the Marine base in Taunton. I'm guessing they use us as a training area. You can't hear them until they are pretty much directly overhead and flying at not much more than 2000 feet. You hear a not very loud noise and the next thing you know a bloody great plane has just shot past
I live on the Gloucestershire/warwickshire border and Herc's are pretty common, as are tornados which seem to use my house as a waypoint!
We are also starting to get into the airshow season when we get all manner of stuff fly over, since we have lived in the house we have had everything from Sopwith Camel to SR71 Blackbird fly over.
For the record, this is NOT my house

I think they're called helicopters.Could be Plod (but they only have little weeny toy helos
), or Merlin or Chinny doing a bit of night low level to an out-of-area field, ie. one in the middle of nowhere in aviation terms.chrisga said:

Chinooks dont sound like regular helis
Yep, I know, Ihave heard chinooks, as recently as Easter when we were up on Cadair Idris on our bikes and were buzzed by a couple coming up and over the hillside right beside us. Scared the bejeezus out of me as we didnt hear them until they were right next to us! The noise we heard the other night didnt really sound like a chinook, but having said that, of course it may well have been. Guess we'll never know now anyway.
