timing for 2.9, and star tester
Discussion
Nick has been using an old gunson fault code reader to sort his engine. The instructions read that, for Ford 2 digit codes (we've taken it the 2.9 is a two digit code engine?), engine service mode is achieved via following the ignition on tests, running the engine, blipping the throttle, and then you have between two and ten minutes to adjust the distributor cap without the ECU fighting you? Is this correct?
Second, is 8 degrees before TDC the correct amount of retardation?
Thanks,
Tony

Sounds a very similar process to the Star TesterKing Fisher said:

Yes according the Steve Heaths BibleI also thought the s2 was 12 BTDC, the way I set my timing (thanks to JedS for the tip) is to remove the spout signal from the dizzy.

Above is the link from jed's diary, and it does work because I recently had a diagnostic done on my engine at my local rolling road place and with the engine in proper service mode the timing was spot on. Good luck with it, and well done to Nick for sorting his car out.
Cheers.....Tony..

Things that you're liable to read in the bible ain't necessarily so
Ch2 v27 sayeth 12 BTDC
Ch4 v84 sayeth 8 BTDC
Scripture according to Pies sayeth 8
www.tvrsseries.com/ 2.9 datasheet
Watch out for thunderbolts
Tim
Edited to correct myself ~ Pies says 12 (As per Prof Haynes as Ragtop correctly points out)

AN UNBELIEVER !!! STONE HIM !!!
I saw chapm 84 and on the same page he talks about coping with lower octane by "... Adjusted in all cases to 9 BTDC instead of the normal 12..."
He must have been drinking Holy water when he wrote this
Come on Steve... Which is it?
I set mine to 12 Last weekend...

Sorry I haven't a clue what's right or wrong (Does that make me a methodist?) but the title of V 84 ( which starts on page 83) is titled 2.8 V6 engines. 12/9/8 who knows?
Btw I'm having problems hearing you Kev, could you repeat that?
Cheers Tim

Sorry Tim I only intended to stone you once... I now understand Chris' echo comment tooBtw I'm having problems hearing you Kev, could you repeat that?

Anyway for what its worth Nick I would recommend 12 BTDC at 900 for your 2.9 non-cat.
If Mark reads this it would be a good SCH technical debate since there doesn't appear to be a right answer (apart from mine
)K

Ok chaps, well it's timed to 8BTDC, should he try 12BTDC? He's using 99octane if that helps.
However, it's still idling really high, at around 1500-2000rpm. New plenum gasket and idle speed control gasket too, so what's happening? If the plug at the back of the idle speed control valve is removed, it idles fine at 1000rpm....any suggestions would be excellent, as the car is rapidly approaching MOT time and he doesn't want to fail on emissions!!!

I would suggest that you set the timing to 12 degrees first and see the results of that. If the rev are still high check that the butterflies are fully closed and then search for air leaks on the induction not forgetting to check the brake servo and vacuum hose
Nick thinks there is still an air leak on the plenum, where the coil sits on the middle bolt. Basically he had to use a different type of bolt as one sheared when he removed it. Could this be the problem? He's having real problems thinking of a solution for it too.As for the servo, how much did you say the ford conversion costs? He's almost out of money now, and I can't afford to help him out either,so he really is stuck!

You might pick up the bits via ebay and then should not be too expensive otherwise TVR Car Parts - you'll need to give them a ringKing Fisher said:

Jeez! sheared when removing
?? so whats left in the hole then ? have you managed to remove the sheared portion and is the hole/thread ok ? if not you will need to drill it out and helicoil the hole if the threads are damaged.K

My mistake, he actually destroyed the threads of the torx bolt. It now has an identically thhreaded allen bolt, but the bolt head is much smaller.

Also, he's going to try 15-12 degrees BTDC, as this is what Ford recommend for the 2.9 Granadas.
He has had the idea of a bottle of gas mentioned, he will also be carrying this out, thanks for the suggestion.
MOT next week, once it's finished, he'll post a full pictoral timeline of his work for you to look at...
