New hood with smaller rear screen...?

My rear screen is in a poor state and it's about time I did something about it.

The rest of the hood looks "ok" at best at the moment but I think it'll look pretty shabby if the screen is replaced!!

A little while ago someone posted a pic in the S forum of, I think, a non S TVR with a completely new roof where the rear window had been made smaller fitting between the roof struts so it was the fabric rather than the screen which folded against the roof struts.

Now that some time has passed does anyone know how this is wearing on the fabric? Also, on the rare occassion the roof is up ( ) I'd be interested to know if it makes it feel much darker in the cabin or rear visibility even worse than it was originally.

I too have thought of this but not in time for my new hood BUT I was wondering about haviving a solid rear window between the stays zipped into the hod so to take the hood down unzip the window top and sides and let the window flop down against the back of the interior. I would also think fitting flexable quarterlights on each side for rear views at junctions ect would be good.

Sounds like mine ! But so far been reluctant to spend £400-500 on something only used very occaisionally, and the new hood would show up the carpets then the new carpets would show up the cracked leather then the restored leather would show up the tired paintwork . . . . . . .

I've also thought about the smaller, fit between the stays, idea. If no ones got a "real one" to show us can anyone photoshop one or something to get an idea how it would look

Mike, I thought I'd seen a pic on here of one but from lack of response I must have seen it elsewhere... It did look good. The purpose of asking now is to see how the owner is getting on with it now fitted i.e. does the fabric crease more than the window used to, being thicker does the fabric stop the hoop going down as far as it did, etc.

Having got some quotes I think I'm just going to replace the plastic window and give the rest a good going over with Renovo.

Whole roof, all seals etc £750 +VAT
Rear screen only £220 +VAT

Hi Ian , sorry missed your earlier post , it was me that posted that pic , its Barry Ashcroft who had it done , he has a Tam . It looked great , i will dig out the pic later when i have time .

Thanks for reassuring me that I'm not going mad (this time anyway!) and that the pic did exist!!!! Do you know how he's getting on with it now it's been fitted for a while? How is the fabric wearing where it creases between the roof stays...?

i looked into having a smaller rear screen on my new hood "as the tamora"
it sounds like a good idea to save the plastic screen from being bent over and getting creased up
in the end i went for the normal size i think having the smaller screen will give you a blind spot
when you come to a awkward y junction and looking over your shoulder and cant see anything ?

just something for you to think about longers ! before you part with some cash

PYNEY, if the Tamora owner is happy with the change and it isn't wearing his fabric too much I'll tape some paper over those parts of my rear window and go for a quick blat to see if rear vision is badly affected before committing to buy

I'll also use some Renovo on the hood before making a decision - if that makes a big improvement I'll just get the rear screen changed.
