Hi all, I used to have a Tivo a couple of years ago and loved the way you could search the descriptions of programs in addition to the title. For those that don't know what I mean, if you liked 'Nurburgring' you could set it to search for the keyword and if ANYTHING on ANY CHANNEL had that word in the description (i.e. Top Gear) then it would record it automatically. It often recorded things on channels you wouldn't even watch normally at 4am! I used to wake up and excited to see what it had recorded!

Anyway, to my question.......Is there anything out there at the moment which can do the same? Either as a stand alone program search or even an app for the iphone which would alert me when something turns up?

Thanks in advance!

Not quite what you were asking for but the TV Planner on the Sky website allows you to search like that. It's not perfect though.

There is nothing, as far as I'm aware, on the market that even get's close to TiVo's advanced search functions, presumably because TiVo hold the patents. As a TiVo owner since launch in 2000, I'm dreading the service being cut in a fortnight's time but hopefully the alternate guide will be up and running soon.

Now that Echostar have finally settled in court over their patent infringments, I wonder if Sky will be next in the firing line over the time-warp patent.

TiVo gone in a fortnight???? Wow, what about those people with lifetime subs? Are the boxes going to be worthless then?

Yes, service to all Series 1 (the only model released in the UK) stops on 1st June. Nobody knows as yet what the boxes will do, will they be totaly locked and do nothing, or will they just allow manual recordings to be programmed.

Basically tough luck if you have a life-time sub, they also stopped charging the monthly £10 to those of us that were not life-time last November. The terms and conditions did say that the service could be stopped at any time.

Those lucky enough to be in a Virgin cable area have been offered a special offer to get a Virgin Tivo box. Those of us not it a Virgin cable area, tough.

As mentioned above there is some development going on to try and mod our Tivo's to get the EPG data from elsewhere. This has been done before. Aussies used to import the UK Tivo and tweaked them and I believe people in Sweden also. So hopefully something will be available soon.
