I'm setting myself a bit of a challenge with a 1k budget, we're after something just as a second car but thought no reason why it shouldn't be fun. We've got the family wagon to cart the children around in and I need something to get to photoshoots with when the Avensis isn't available and I don't need to carry the lights around in.

So, anything in particular to look out for? I can see that around 1k seems to point to 100k+ cars. Is there anything 'quirky' specific to MR2s?

Not looking for a T bar, don't want to have to worry about leaky roofs.

Thanks!

Im no expert as i bought my 1st one today but youll easily get a non tbar for 1000 and quite a good one too.
I have previously had porsche 944's but i always need change and i can tell you that the mr2 compares very well indeed

Check out the mr2ownersclub forums for plenty of detail

I'm tempted to get one, as a second car.. But I barely use my first car anyway .. so be a complete waste of money!

It's a lot of car for the money, and I think they're gorgeous looking cars.

I've just realised I've not actually contributed to this thread at all... Good luck in the search

I have had 2 now, both were UK models with the standard sunroof as opposed to the t Bar.
They are fantastic little cars, great fun and the prices have now dropped so you can get an early UK model for well below 1k.
My first one was a green rev 3 and I sold it with about 130ish k but it still drove fantastically, my current one is a silver and black rev 4 with about 75k.

If you hunt around you will easily find one, just check some of the major work has been done, namely the timing belt, it’s a big big job on the MR2.

Cambelt needs changing every 100,000km/60,000miles.
Alternator failure due to water dripping from the engine lid vent.
Seized brake calipers. They are the floating type and the sliders need to be kept free.
Seized handbrake cables due to water ingress.
Leaking coolant pipes to the front radiator.

A lot of MR2s are second 'weekend fun' cars and it's this lack of regular use which contributes to the brake/handbrake issues.

Yellow ones are much less common than red/white/blue/black. Does it have a single digit in the reg plate?

This is what I bought for well under a thousand. It's far from a show car has its stone chips and scrapes and the usual knackered leather drivers seat but what a fun car for the money and the engine clutch gearbox are solid.
I should point out tht it's a REV 3 which usually come in far dearer than a rev 1 or 2 smile

As for leaky roofs , load of miff all you need to avoid one is vaseline, cheap and effective (said the actress to the bishop) and nothig looks better than an MR2 with her top off !

My advice would be to go for it. Don't dismiss the T-bar either.
I've been driving them since 1997 and have owned a rev 1 and a rev 4. They are very reliable. The only things to go are the electric aerial and the engine cover catch. And neither of those are a big deal!

I had an NA Mr2 before my tubby. Loved it to bits, but the tempation of the GS-GTE was too much. Looking back, I;d have an NA in a heartbeat. Sounded very nice, and it handled no differently to the turbo. Lovely motors.

Don't use vaseline on rubber seals (sounds like some sort of fetish) it'll degrade the rubber, causes it too go hard I believe. There's a very effective fix known amongst MR2 owners as "the silicon sealant and clingfilm method".
