Alps......suitable for kids or not?

As the title,is it?
Want to go for a long weekend in October with the family and may be take in a bit of road riding as well as MTB.I fancy cross country rather than DH.

Have you got any favorite places with decent accommadation.

Yep, there's some great places to stay. I'm going in July to watch the Alpe d'Huez stage and we always stay in the chalets at Camping Cascades which is literally at the foot of Alpe d'Huez. They are superbly appointed - link to the website below.

Failing that, you should find accommodation in Bourg d'Oisans - the town is about 1.5km from the base of the climb. The link below provides information about the Ecrins area, which is fantastic for all forms of offroading.

There's tonnes of stuff you can do with kids in the Alps in the summer - high ropes courses, walk inside glaciers, rafting/canyoning/canoeing, sailing on the lakes, cycling, go up in the cable cars, alpine rack n pinion railways, swimming etc etc

I could go on...

But October, as a very wide brush statement, is a bit grim. When I lived out in Chamonix used to come home in October because it was a dead time and the weather tended to be grey. Summer heat had gone, pretty white snow not turned up yet.

Thanks for the replies.Not at all bothered by the weather as we live in the Pyrenees and October is the end of the season so we just want to escape.
Thanks for the camping hint but we will give camping a very wide berth.......hotels only is the stipulation from Mrs smifffymoto.

I like Chambery, Has it's own airport and under 50miles from either Lyon or Geneva, very picturesque old garrison town with a cosmopolitan student population, good restaurants,some nice dedicated car free cycle routes out of town and good access to the lower Alps.

Les Deux Alpes is good too, nice friendly sports/leisure vibe about the place with plenty of routes from the centre, bit of a hill back up to town mind you..
