So myself and the OH are looking for our next new series, we generally like the same things Dexter, House, Sons of Anarchy, Lie to Me, Boardwalk Empire etc

I loved The Wire, she never got into it

So we are aiming to get all the below at some point but are undecided on which first

Mad Men
Justified
Breaking Bad
True Blood
Walking Dead

and maybe Treme (not sure on this)

So as you can see this list has been built up from some PH recommendations and IMDB

Any of these head and shoulders above the rest?

Good post! I love topics such as this one. May I suggest The Walking Dead first as it is only 6 episodes IIRC. Its really good and the second season should be coming around not too long in the distant future. Best be ready for it, you know, get 'connected' to the characters.

Afterwards, I would highly reccomend (how the hell do you spell 'recommend?' Anyway I write it, it just looks funny. Is it 2 c's or 2 m's, or both or what!?! Anyway, afterwards I would go with one of following:

The Sopranos
OZ
Six Feet Under

I know these all older but trust me when I tell you they will captivate you a hell of a lot better than series like Justified and Mad Men which were very anticipated by me but were a major let down. Can't comment on Breaking Bad as I haven't watched enough of it to form an opinion. And please don't let anyone talk you into House. Its good, but trust me when I tell you that you will not be able to wait to get home and sit down with your OH and watch either of the ones I listed. We literally zipped through all of them in like 6 months.

But wait, if you want to watch the best series ever in my opinion, watch LOST. My OH has bugged me since week 1 of ur relationship to watch it and I kept shrugging it off, wish I hadn't. I gave in when we signed up for NetFlix almost 2 weeks ago and I'm serious when I tell you that I cannot turn it off. I stay up until 5-6 am watching it. That's no lie either. I am a zombie during the day at work because of it. I get like 4hrs of sleep because of it. We are already on the 3rd episode of season 3!!! Not even 2 weeks ago since we started watching it mind you. And if you think that is slow, consider that each season has 26 episodes!!! Yes, 26!! Were watching it right now, I just came outside for my ritual smoke and a read through on PH.

Trust me, LOST, give it a go after The Walking Dead. You will NOT be dissapointed. Just know this, each episode gets better than the last, and for your own sanity, know this: they will explain everything...

You'll see what I mean if you watch it. You'll be thanking me.

ENJOY!! Please let me know what you decide. And don't bother with the ones you listed.

No, im sorry I have to disagree with all that is suggested. Watch Walking Dead definately, its amazing and you can watch it in 2 days. Then go on to Lost or one of the others I suggested.

Justified
Breaking Bad (Hurry up and release season 3 already!)
Babylon 5 (On last season now)
The Shield

I would recommend The Killing.
A recent Danish crime series that has gone worldwide and won loads of awards.
I think it ranks up there with the Sopranos as one of the best TV series ever largely due to an interesting twisty plot and excellent characters with a gritty edge to it.

Cheers for the replies guys

And also thanks to those who are unable to read OP's wink Dexter and House have both been watched and enjoyed

With respect to Lost, I am glad you are enjoying it but its not for me at all, I did try and season one was ok, but to be honest I thought it was turgid ste in the main, blown up by its own hype and has a certain type of fanboism, I have been told many times by people who perservered that it was great andc I obviously just don't 'get it' ,fine with me

Anyway back on topic, I will definitley give Breaking Bad a good go, I did suggest the sopranos to the OH but she isnt keen, she wasnt keen on Dexter at first though until I got her to watch a few episodes now she loves it, although we are finding season 5 quite annoying

Anyway cheers I shall head off to Play/Amazon and grab some bits

Justified is superb. Season 2 is better than season 1. Based on what you listed, you'll like it.

If you haven't seen it, then get the box set of The Sopranos. IMO, absolutely the best drama series ever made, bar none. Those who said that Boardwalk Empire was the new Sopranos were wrong. It comes nowhere close, despite being good in its own right.

You may also like:
Pushing Daisies
Dead Like Me
Threshold
Life
State of Play

Personally, I'd say give LOST a miss. Started well, got a bit lost (no pun intended), went a bit weird and then built up a lot of hype to what was probably the most disappointing ending to a series ever made. The youtube clip summarising it is spot on.

TBH, I don't think there is any real value in suggesting what to watch first and you should base it on what is more practical for you and the Mrs.

However, I would suggest you add Californication, Eastbound & Down, Hung, Nurse Jackie & Weeds to your list.

I forgot to add the Sopranos, I thought I had read it in your op.
And of course Hung and Nurse Jackie both good.
I would also add Spiral, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley Peoplebiggrin

Oh and really, watch Game of Thrones, I know it's just started but it is the best current show in the box.

edit, and Spartacus GotA was really good, just started watching Blood and Sand.
