Help with, measuring fitness start point, trainers and heart monitor
Discussion
Hi, I'm 30 and used to be pretty fit. I still play football on a sat but with work I often find it hard to fit in training or gym time.
10 years ago I did sport everyday, I'm keen to get a better work/life balance and getting back into training will help.
I have my gym training sorted, but would like to measure my current fitness so I can see how I progress. I am looking for a good way to do this, any ideas?
Also looking to purchase a heart rate monitor so I can ensure I'm working hard enough at the right times. Any suggestions, don't need gps and would prefer not to pay a fortune but want something decent.
Lastly, need a new pair of running trainers. Any recommendation? Was going to pop into a running shop, but do I really need them to analyse my run etc?
Yours in sport.

Measuring your fitness can be a number of different things really. Depends on what you're trying to measure, distance, speed etc?
I bought another Sunnto watch recently the M2, cost my £65. I'm a big fan of the Sunnto gear.
Link for reference although this one is pitched at guys, my other half is quite happy to wear it since it's not big or heavy when she goes training.

As for trainers measurements, really that is the best money you'll ever spend. Getting properly measured for training will help avoid injuries and help your running to be far more efficient. After all your training won't be up to much if you can't train because you're injured!

Thanks for this.
I suppose I am looking to test things like how my lungs and heart are. Fat levels would be good. Can I do this by testing recovery rates etc? I can monitor speed and distance no problem.
The monitor looks good, do I need a chest strap thing or is that enough.
Off to running shop tomorrow
