TV news last night, announcement from fuel suppliers warning to expect an 25% price increase later this year! Reasons offered - wholesale price increase and effect of Japans recent disaster. So we know how Japan is still suffering but how the heck doe's that impact our domestic fuel price, after all Japan isn't on our list of suppliers, is it? Just what is going on with the huge and continuing escalation of the cost of our energy to warrant the increases over the past few years.

The only reason japan would effect prices are if they used more gas which isn't unlikely if they have switched off the nuke stations and are running on LNG

That would make a ltr of petrol around £2. Unfortunately that would be the point where I would have to give up driving .

Either that or we could all MTFU and force the government to set sensible prices as happens in luxumbourg (sp?)

Just another excuse for them to screw more money out of us. And we will do what about it? Bend over and take it I should imagine.

I thought crude had recently dropped to $110 per barrel down from $150 last year so why do prices keep going up.
A 25% increase on $110 is still only $137.5. When oil was at $150 we were paying £1.25/litre.

Tax and more tax on top. But last nights news headline was announced over a image of domestic cooker gas burning away. Perhaps indicating B.G. leading the increase to come, again.

The issue is simple - toothless and inept regulators are increasingly helpless in the face of big business. The privatised utilities are, surprise surprise, behaving pretty much the same as their public sector predecessors.

All the regulator can do is look at the numbers and say "you're making too much profit". The companies say "no we're not" and its game over unless and until Tory Labour or Tory LibDem have the guts to do something about it. No chance of that in the current climate. See also petrol price on the forecourts and negative real interest rate on your savings. And RPI.

Just checked the price of a 19kg calor gas refill (country yokel) during the past 12 months its gone from 26 pounds to 35 pounds! Not bad profiteering on a waste product. No fuel is escaping the continuing hike in prices it seems, except my own logs cut from my own trees.

Kudos

How much is petrol in your neck of the woods if a 25% increase makes it £2?

The government will simply turn around and tell us all to insulate our homes and invest in Green solar power or some such BS and the suppliers know this so will screw us for every penny they can.

I would be interested in how much your logs cost, or do you cut your own?

Mentioned a month or two back that the Government is in talks with energy suppliers and other large businesses regarding a financing scheme for householders to insulate the home. So your not far off the mark with your comment.

20,000 pointless but very expensive windymills, including 7,000 offshore giants, need paying for somehow so...we get the bill. Connection to the grid alone will cost us a billion or two.

At least we can pay through the nose in quiet satisfaction knowing that it's all based on The Guardian's environment columns umm the totally independent and incredibly accurate IPCC reporting process erm Stern's scientific brilliance and economic genius risible junkscience.

I've been posting calculations showing domestic energy costs spiralling upwards, to the level of current announcements and beyond, for quite some time. I'm sure some PHers will remember as it's too depressing to dig out that particular content yet again.

Aside from winning tonight's Tuesday debut draw on the EuroMillions lottery, if we want to keep warm and lit we can either move to a location where heating and lighting isn't needed so much, or buy Damart and some candles.

Oh yes and our energy security is royallly fked so in the near future we won't even get continuous supplies of the power we're selling our kidneys and mortgaging our gonads to pay for.
