The crash itself wasn't live but the feed cut to him lying there motionless with his face damaged, at first I expected him to get up and jump back on his bike but as they cut the straps on his helmet and his jersey and gave him CPR it started looking pretty grim. I felt a bit sick afterwards thinking i'd just watched some poor bloke die live the telly.Very sad indeed. RIP.

I only switched the telly on for 1 minute in the afternoon - Sky HD's live coverage was on - and it was at the exact moment that the camera zoomed in on what was left of his face - the blood was just pumping out of his nose - I was nearly sick and turned it off - later I found out that he had tragically passed away.I was going to watch the recap tonight but they ran a mark cavendish program instead

From the reports of the riders behind, it appears he was desdcening on the left hand side of the road, was looking over his shoulders back up the road (perhaps with a view to easing off to rejoin the group behind) and caught either his bars on a low wall on his inside or his pedal on a rock. This "catapulted" him across the road and into the rock face/wall on the right hand side of the road.

At the speeds these nutters ride, accidents like this will never be 100% avoidable. With the best will (and safety kit) in the world, there is still a huge degree of luck.
Very sad though and particularly gruesome; I too will not be looking at the video footage.

You can do yourself a favour and not look at the footage. I watched a recording of the live coverage on Sky+ last night, but didn't know what had happened as I was avoiding any news coverage as I didn't want to find out the day's results.Awful.

It was a bit much filming it live at the Giro in my view. As I said you're happily watching a race with your children and suddenly some poor bloke is lying there on the ground. You think' oh look some blokes had a crash, he'll be up again in a minute, I wonder if his bike is knackered'? Next thing it looks serious and then you find out the poor guy's dead.
I still don't think they should have been broadcasting him when they did, I'm sure at the scene it was clear he was seriously injured straight away when viewers at home had to study the footage for a moment to understand the gravity of the incident.
It's not like you're looking for snuff films online when you're watching the Giro. I suppose it's not often people are killed in Pro Cycling the film crew possibly didn't understand how serious it was. Who knows.

If its what's on youtube that they showed (I presume you didn't see him actually hit the wall?) then its not THAT bad, obviously when you know he's dead its not nice, but its the nature of the sport, and its not the choice of Eurosport what gets filmed, remember the rest of the world isn't as nanny as us, you only need to watch European news to see that, they show everything.

I noticed in the online cycling news people like cyclingnews.com just show a photo of the race but The Italian Gazzetta dello sport showed him lying there dead. They've updated and removed the photos of him lying there and now just show his bike.Eurosport don't have any say in the pictures. They are taking a live feed from RAI in Italy. The continentals have a different view of showing these sorts of things than we do in the UK. IMHO it wasn't as gruesome as some are making out, but never nice seeing anyone in that sort of state, particularly with the knowledge of what happened next.

Have you not watched any pro cycling before? They always show the crashes and normally end up rewinding them several times afterwards to show replays whenever possible. Unfortunately in this case it was a lot more serious and I think when they realised the gravity of the situation they pulled the camera out of there. Like others I was out all day yesterday and had Sky+ and had then avoided the news so it didn't spoil the results so I didn't realise anything was wrong until I watched it. I think David Harmon coped with it admirably actually.
Anyway, I'm really saddened by the accident, it only takes a momentary lapse of concentration and BAM lights out. Rest in peace Woulter
