TVR S1 - What do I do now?

Hi,

Our S1 is currently sat at garage. The crank needs re-grinding so engine and gearbox out. Estimate of £1500 + costs so far for inspection. Early this year we spent £800 having the shells replaced and a removeable crossmember on the chasis to drop the sump out so am obviously not pleased that this did not fix the problem.

My query is.. What do we do now? (I have 24 hours to let the garage know what to do)
Do you think we can sell the car as it is with out spending all that money to fix it? How much do you think it is worth as it stands?

Details of the car if it helps.. 1988 E reg. 42k miles. Owned since 2000. New suspension and Gaz shocks in mid 2006. Converted to unleaded in mid 2008. Always garaged.

would the work you had done earlier this year be under guarantee still ? failing that how about an engine from ebay, surely cheaper than £1800

Sounds a lot for a crank regrind.

They've said £1200+VAT. Assume new shells etc required too. Don't know what else is required.

A rebuild won't be cheap on any engine. But that sounds expensive. Are they doing all the work? If you took the engine out and just gave them the bottom end, the cost would be a fraction

They are doing everything. Im not in a position to take an engine out and take it to them. Car is currently at their garage with the sump off etc.

I guess it might be a good buy for someone who can take the engine out then. But what is an S1 worth that needs the engine taking out!?

Give Specialised Engines Ltd a ring and see how much they want for a recon 2,8 these days. ISTR they weren't much over 1K.

I find it odd that you had an S1 without the hardened valve seats though? What is the engine number on the VIN plate?

That ebay engine has got to be worth a punt for the crank but if you have no facilities to take out the engine would be tricky.

The advice I was given was to stick with the original engine if possible - you at least know where its been / whats happened to it.

Good advice IMHO.

If you have lost confidence in the garage (they may not want the business anyway hence the high price) another outfit would transport it - usual cost about £1 a mile.

Pity you're not still in Bingham I'd have taken it on - I'm out of work next week.

The car is actually in Notts. Been there since it had the work done earlier this year. Is at a different place to where it had work earlier this year though. Its about the 5th place we've had look at it. It's currently at an engine specialist in Newark.

Going ahead with the repairs. Fingers crossed all gets sorted this time and we have a working TVR once again!
