Cassette removal, where did I go wrong?

Just after a bit of advice here. My winter/rain bike is in a bit of a state so I decided to strip it down and clean everything up. I’m wanting to learn so thought it’s a good excuse. Plan is new cables, chain, cassette etc.

Everything went well until I needed to remove the cassette. I took the wheel off, removed the skewer and got my eBay locking ring nut removal tool thing out. Tried to put it in the space it goes and it wouldn’t fit. The problem being the bolt connecting to the rod going through the hub was in the way and the tool wouldn’t go in.

I removed this and as expected a load of bearings fell out. No problem, greased them up and back in.

Checked YouTube and I shouldn’t have needed to remove this.

So, where did I go wrong? I’m assuming the tool I bought is rubbish, to be fair it was the cheapest.

Were you trying to remove a screw on freewheel rather than removing a cassette from a freehub body?

It would be quite odd for the cassette lock ring removal tool not to fit into the lock ring:

I was trying to remove a cassette from a hub, the right in your picture. Shimano hub with a 9 speed cassette if that makes any difference.

Tool not clearing the locknuts on the axle? New tool from the likes of Park Tool or Pedros might be worth a punt.
IME with so-so tools they don't engage that far anyway: certainly enough to make you think something's in the way.

Just tried this tool on another wheel and it did go on, although very tight. looks like its just a st tool, which is note stuck on my spare wheels.

I never leant about buying cheap tools.
