So front page news on the BBC today is an attack on the Tories as being "ruthless, calculating and very tribal" over av. This is a guy who is stupid enough to be entrapped by a bit of totty in a short skirt, yet repeatedly mouths off against his colleagues. I know I wouldn't employ him!

It's called politics.

He speaks for a lot of Lib Dems so could well be positioning himself for a leadership challenge.

Cable and Huhne should resign as whining deadweight, surplus to requirements.

Exactly, but Cameron is giving him a platform as business secretary. If the coalition is so repulsive, why does he not resign? He's just seeking attention now the news channels don't pick up the phone to him as the 'wise lib dem economist'. Time for Cameron to make the move and sack him- couldn't be a better time for it

Cable and Huhne have both sniffed the leather of their fancy ministerial briefcases and the hide in their chauffeur driven limos.

A difficult addiction to break particularly when both seem to think they're indispensible. Never mind how essential they consider themselves to be in Party terms, they're both as useful to the country as a damp patch.

He's made more of a prat of himself over the past year than I could have ever imagined. He's finding fault with the coalition at every turn, and it appears that he's too soft to be part of a government.

It's strange to think that two years ago he was considered to be some sort of sage by the media. Now he just looks like a whiny fool who's batting way above his weight.

Time for a reshuffle I think.

It just goes to show how easy it is to sound reasonable and sensible whilst on the sidelines. Once decisions have to be made, and responsibilities need to be considered, then it all gets a bit more difficult.

Maybe the media should pay a bit more attention to this particular phenomenon.

Yes, he does seem to have underperformed since getting into office.

Leadership challenge? Leadership of what? LibDems have suffered big damage over the last 12 months. If they have any sense at all (?) then IMO they will quieten down for a year or more and just get on with the serious business of government.

Simon Hughes looks more like a future leadership contender but may be too far to the left of the party to attract significant votes either within the party or from the electorate.

It's very easy to sound sage with the wisdom of hindsight, and not being in a position to have to make (and be judged) on your decisions.

As a floating AV voter, Vince Cable is directly responsible for me voting 'no'. His statement that AV would create an environment for keeping the Tories out of power means a LibLab pact forever - no thanks!

I'm voting for the "ruthless, calculating and very tribal" party. They sound like they get things done.

They won't resign yet - they'll wait at least 2 more weeks to get ministerial pension rights

Not answering for CWH, but...

Superficially it's an affable chat is it not. Vince wraps his gifts very well in smiles and generalisations.

My guess is that Cameron would rather have Cable nside the tent pissing out than outside pissing in (though it seems that Cable has a knack for being inside and pissing in). The longer he does what he is doing in his present position, the more damage he does to himself.

That's politics. Let your oppos destroy themselves. Much less labour intensive than doing it yourself.

ETA: looks from the Mail on Sunday as if someone in Tory Central Office has decided to fast track Huhne to oblivion with a leak though ...

Interestingly, when I heard this I simply thought that it showed that the LibDems don't have the courage of their convictions, can't put a plan together and can't stick together.
