Hello there gentle folks of the forum of Fiat's finest (try saying that half-cut). I have a 1998 Punto which I love to death and defend to the hilt, however its been throwing wobblies recently withr egards to starting and cooling. The full story is on the thread below

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The problems of which I speak are in detail on the second post down with pics, if anyone has any ideas I'd be much appreciated. I am prepared for the horrible three letters of doom incidentally, however I would stress than when running the engine runs an absolute treat.

I'd be lying if I said I hadn't been tempted. Then it splutters into life and behaves like a normal car again. Just a normal car with that charm and character we all love. The fact that you can thrash it, get treated to a racecar soundtrack and still only be doing 47 is a bonus.

I know what you mean, I've had a couple of Punto's, although both new, but my fil had a new white one, just like yours and kept it for nine years, till he sold it for peanuts when he px'd it for a new one.......Cars are not just lumps of metal, they have character, and the Punto has it in abundance...

Hope you get it sorted cheaply....smile

Cheers dude. Now the symptoms are developing a bit more - it just dropped a cylinder trying to cross a busy DC, not pleasant - they're looking more and more like coil pack failure, so will pick a new one up tomorrow. If that doesn't work I am all out of ideas.

Great success! £30 for a new ignition coil and a new free pressure cap for the radiator have resulted in di Punto running like a charm. Sometimes needs a wee boot of throttle to get it going, but once you give it that it settles into a steady, cool running idle. It is now running better than it ever has done previously under my stewardship. Happy days.

Time to go play on some back roads. Arrividerci!
