Hi guys my Alfa 156 (v6) has developed a squeel when starting up from cold on the cambelt side (cambelt all tentioners & waterpump done 2 years ago)

The squeel usually goes away after 2 or 3 miles but is persistent when its lashing down like now!

It quietens down when using electric (fogs or rear screen heater)and is louder when no electric is being used.

I understand there is an aux belt on the cambelt side that drives the alterenator?

Is changing that belt and pully a big job like the cambelt? I think it may be slipping or a touch loose? Or possibly the alternator itself (charges fine)

Thanks!

Yes, sounds like the auxiliary belt slipping. Not just a simple matter of changing the belt though.

It may be worn as you suggest but also the tensioner may have given up allowing the belt to slip.

But, the good news is iirc it's on the outside of the cam cover.

More likely to be the auxillary belt (the cambelt is toothed and therefore won't slip). Shouldn't be hard to sort out, just a case of increasing the tension by moving the alternator further up its bracket.

If you can get at it, try applying some belt dressing spray.
