155 very bad emissions results :(
Discussion
my newly acuired 155 has failed her MOT spectacularly on her emissions this morning, readings are as follows
CO max 0.30% - actual 3.63% (run 1)
3.52% (run 2)
HC max 200ppm actual 211 ppm (run 1)
259 ppm (run 2)
Lambda 0.97-1.03 0.90
0.91
and on idle
co max 0.50% actual 5.10%
now, although i can take a car apart and rebuild it etc, other than replacing service items (just got a mate with a garage to order new plugs (8), oil filter, oil, air filter and lambda) other than the cat what else could it be thats making the results so god damn awful?
would appreciate your thoughts and inputs

I agree with V6alfisti. A good thrashing is what she needs (ooh err matron).
Seriously, get on a hilly road and do some revs and throttle. On a motorway, accelerate from 50 to the legal limit (or what your conscience will allow), then back off down to 50 and repeat. Do this for a good half hour, and make sure the engine maintains a high temperature (is your thermostat OK? A cold engine will produce high emissions).
You could add a dose of carb/injector cleaner first, but I'm not 100% convinced by these snake oil formulations. If you do use anything like this, do it on a near empty tank then refill before the MOT. The additives can make the emissions worse while they are going through the system.
You'll be surprised how much improvement you get (unless there's something fundamentally wrong with the ignition or fuelling system). In any case, you will have had a bit of fun hooning about. It beats most other forms of car maintenance.

Looks like it's over fuelling...what does the temperature guage show under normal driving?
Could be the following....
1. Water temp sensor - tells the ECU to enrich/lean the mixture
2. Thermostat - links with the above sensor
3. Lambda sensor -will be affected by the above but could also be faulty.
Water temp sensor/thermostat is the usual culprit....a good blast can help but not if the readings are way out.

cheers for the posts guys
always give any car a good blast before an MOT, i thought it was an unwritten rule you had to
have ordered a few bits n bobs that will hopefully sort it out, going to fit them tonight and see how it goes.
temp guage sits at halfway during normal driving, and performance isnt effected (i dont think anyway, its not the fastest car i own.. so feels sluggish anyway, but its better on juice and more practical, hence getting it and making the bravo the 'fun' car)
