Alfa Montreal - I want/need one
Discussion
The first and most important thing is you need some really groovy 70s sunglasses with drilled metal arms. Once you've got those you can relax.

The first thing to realise is that the Montreal is based on the "normal" 105 running gear so with that whacking great engine up front it's a good GT car but not a pin sharp trackday driving machine. Buy it for the noise and the looks more than anything else. They have a very enthusiastic register within the AROC who battle hard to find parts and what have you. I believe general service items are available from the likes of www.classicalfa.com but the thoughts of anything going wrong with that engine are a bit scary and are one the main reasons values remain low. As usual with old Italians, buy the best you can and preferably one that someone else has spent lots on!

Have a look at the feature in this months classic cars magazine, it has a small buying guide. I found that with mine it needed most areas looking at, although it had been stored for some time before i bought it. One of the biggest jobs is the water pump bearing / seal arrangement. Make sure cars you look at have had the stainless conversion done as the whole front of the car and engine have to come apart to correct. My montreal has been excellent ( after much work! ) and has been down to Le mans and back with no problems. Having said that it is up for sale, see advert on pistonheads. Happy hunting.
Had mine for five years, never tire of the looks and the noise. Always track down the best example you can, RHD cars are rarer but Montreals have a huge blind spot issue due to the B pillar so can be tricky at roundabouts etc. First job should be to replace the water pump seals as this is the main achilies heal and generaly leads to fair sized aditional shopping list as heads have to come off. Head gasgets etc should be genuine as patten parts are dubious quality, glass is unobtainable and distributer and spica fuel injection set up are not for the faint hearted. Good luck and welcome to the fold.

. Any tips on what one should look for and what they are like to drive and own? I know, as is probably obvious by now, literally nothing about them....thank you!
