New 166's available for 17k
Discussion
I've noticed a few independent Alfa dealer selling new 57 plate 166's (3.0 sportronic) over the last few days. They appear to be imports, RHD but speedo's in kmh. At 17k they sound good, but the devaluation would make them more expensive that cars costing a lot more.
They were at Monzasport and Veloces.

They have a batch of 156 2.0TSpark Selespeeds at the moment for £11999.

Just noticed some for £10999, too:

Shame I'm hooked into a company car for the next 5-10 months (if I hit 80k miles before March, I get a new one), or I'd buy one of those 156s and stick an LPG conversion on it.
<thinks>
The 166 should surely be in the bargain barge thread?

They have been discussed on Alfa Owner for a while now - destined for the Far East (Malaysia I think) when the importer decided they didnt want them and they have been bought up 'cheap' here.
There was a batch of 156s as well, they were sold very quickly for about £10k I believe. To be honest I think £17k is still a little bit on the expensive side, they will still lose value astonishingly quickly
Not having a diesel in the range really killed them, if you look at secondhand 5 series, it looks like 90% are diesel thesedays(I may be wrong). There was a batch of 156s as well, they were sold very quickly for about £10k I believe. Yes - they did a 2.4 JTD in Europe but didn't feel it was worth converting it to RHD as the UK market wasn't big enough. But it wasn't big enough because there was no diesel available to company car drivers!!!
Lovely looking cars though.
Anyone thinking of indulging in these cars, make sure they've had the correct rust-proofing for the UK market(usually much thicker and heavier than that of Euro, or in this case, Asia-spec cars).
Mate of mine bought a Hong Kong spec 156 at a huge discount from an independent dealer and the floorpan had almost disintegrated within 18 months.
Not suggesting that this is the case with these cars but please make sure before parting with your hard-earned.

Seems very odd, given that they're a galvanised shell and I'm yet to see a 156 with any signs of rust.Mate of mine bought a Hong Kong spec 156 at a huge discount from an independent dealer and the floorpan had almost disintegrated within 18 months.

Thats strange as the weather in HK is pretty similar to here.Mate of mine bought a Hong Kong spec 156 at a huge discount from an independent dealer and the floorpan had almost disintegrated within 18 months.

Still surprises me.
I'm banned from AO, so I don't bother reading it at all these days.
Care to give me a breakdown of where they're rusting? - I can think of a couple of places they may go, depending on options fitted.
Firstly, well done for getting banned from AO. Secondly I'm surprised any Alfa since the 75 has got any serious rust issues. The 75 started the trend with plenty of single sided galvanised panels. The 155 was almost totally galvanised, and I'd guess that anything since has been totally galvanised as well. Rust on Alfa's these days is usually down to poor accident repairs.I'm banned from AO, so I don't bother reading it at all these days.

Oh and getting back on topic, a couple of years back, I regularly saw fully loaded 166's being pushed through auction, ex-demo 6mths old 6-8000miles, only reaching £10-12k . Nice cars, but if you buy one, you better plan on keeping it a long time.

The floorpans are usually the firt place they go. Bodily, they're OK but underneath is where you need to watch on imports.I'm banned from AO, so I don't bother reading it at all these days.

Reckon a 166 at £17k is not such a bad deal, nearly new UK rhd 166 went for £20k plus in 2006. Look at total cost of ownership versus a new high spec mondeo. Then go and sit in them both, but sit in the mondeo first or you will never know what it looks like inside.
Residuals may not be good, but there will be a fair few current 166 owners looking for a replacement when their current model (eventually) wears out.
