Just been checking levels on fathers ancient E320. (93) There is a hydraulic fluid tank on the nearside at the front with 2 pipes leading from it which go to the back of the car finally arriving at the diff. This is not self levelling suspension as its not an estate. There is a plastic cover with a junction about 2 thirds the way down the car and a series of pipes coming from it. One seems to go to the power steering pump. Is this traction control or something and if so how does it work? Any info gratefully recieved.

I also thought it might be the self-levelling.

It probably has ASD (er... anti-slip differential, I think. some sort of differential anyway). Does it have an ASD light in the dash?

Yep the ASD light lights up on test ie start but goes out suggesting all is well. Why would it have a separate fluid though?

I'm looking in the 124 Haynes manual here and the only fluid reservoir on the nearside is for the self-levelling suspension - but as you say - it's not an estate, or the ABS hydraulic unit.

I've got a 93 E280 estate - I'll take a quick look tomorrow and will try to work out what it is.
