E Class Estate £4k max

I'm looking at getting an E class estate with the seats in the boot as a stop gap 7 seater. I've got up to £4k to spend on it. Obvioulsy, with that sort of money mileages are going to be high. what sort of life span does the auto box on these have, and what else should I be looking for. I know rust can be an issue but specicf points would be handy.
Why is it some are as rotten as a pear, and others don't seem to have a rust problem?

The cars up to a certain point were not galvanised, hence why they are a crumbling mess.
Look under the door seals as this is where they first start to show signs of going, and also under the bottom of the tailgate.
I love the W210 (or S210 in estate form as many point out to me!) estate, I bought one as a stop gap when we had our second son, had an E91 sport touring at the time and it just wasn't big enough, buggy and dog wouldn't both fit in it.
So bought a facelift 2001 E320 in old man green and terry wogan biege interior, and it was awesome. Think I paid £3450 for it, with 80k miles on it, averaged around 25mpg which is only about 4-5mpg less than I got from our W211 E320cdi, and the same age diesel would have been at least 50% more.
I sold it and bought a 3.2 A6 Quattro avant, which is a nice car, however I do regret selling the E320, I actually think it was the better car, obviously not all the toys of the new Audi, but just something about it.
The rear is massive and really usable space too, even when using the seats...

I can personally vouch for the previous incarnation, the W124. Mine has 7 seats, and weird orthopaedic front ones with inflatable air cushions in. Everything in the car works, the gearbox is perfectly smooth up and down, and currently on 215,000 odd miles.
Never a hitch, no rust, never a problem with the old thing, it just keeps going and still feels like quality.
Oh and probably worth about £600.

The gearbox requires a 40k oil & filter service. If this has been maintained you should not have any problems with it. On the rust even some face-lift models have them although MB addressed the problem to an extent.
You just have to check the history for warranty claims and hope the seller has kept records of bodywork.
