Been offered a 1998 S280 by a colleagues father.

It is dark blue with grey leather. Average condition, a few scrapes and scratches.

Full history (not Merc).

105k on the clock, last service at 103k cost £1000.

Guy has had the car 8 years.

What does the PH collective think? He was making noises about £2500, but this sounds VERY strong to me.... I was thinking more like £1500??

Thanks guys

I think you are thinking right, 2.5k is too much.
£1.5k would be a good deal but I doubt he'll go that low.
£1750-£1800 sounds fair, especially with £1ks worth of work just done.

£2500 - no way.

S280 is the base model. Has the head gasket been done? Does it have a sunroof, parking sensors (there were options). How many keys (around £150 for another one). Tax and MOT?

S280 is also a frustrating drive....this same chassis has anything up to a 6 litre V12 moving it around so it hobbled by the 2.8.

I would want to know what was done at the last service.

Oh....and unless that aircon is blowing cold (pay for a regas if you want!), don't touch it....common problem with the W140's is the evaporator or condensor failing...and one of them requires the interior to be stripped to the firewall.

I'd want to know what wsa done at the 103k service. I think the service interval on these is 9k with a big service due at 36k so if a big one (£1000?) has been done at 103k, I'd want to fully understand why. Was the 27K service late or was it early with the 36K?

Howeve, I understand it is 12mths or 9k mile so it depends on what interval the services have been done.
