W123 and C107 projects

Just started with these. The C107 is a 450 SLC needing new inner and outer sills, plus a few more bits and bobs, but is a lovely car. Interior is pretty mint.

I thought I'd start on the W123 first though as it was a lot less work, basically just the front wings and a tidy up.

Turned out a bit more than that as the first batch of paint was nowhere near the right colour, and the panels needed a fair amount of convincing to fit, remotely.

So here's the W123......






And the slc only having been cleaned

I love the SLC. I wish I had never got rid of mine. Although mine was signal red over anthracite velours: not a patch on silver green over green leather. I'd be very keen to see how this progresses.

Right....the SLC went in today for the new sills and other bits and pieces ( I'm not as adept a welder as my mate is) and I have just finished refurbishing the W129 16" alloys for it. I prefer them to the Bundt 14" wheels on the car now. Still trying to find a slight misfire under load, perhaps a legacy of being stood so long. Managed to locate a Right front bumper chrome as mine's rotten, and the right rear wheel arch is on it's way to me now. I have opted to go with BMW Opal Grun for the respray, for some good reasons. I don't want to have to paint base and clear with my equipment and in my temporary 6x3m gazebo and the BMW paint is available in cellulose. It allows me to throw loads of paint on the car and then 1200 paper it back to matt before machine polishing it to a high standard. This way I can get a really smooth finish without the potential of going through the clear coat whilst wet papering the paint. It's such a close match that you would never notice, even if parked next to a thistle car, and saves me from doing the doorshuts.
Next hassle while the car is in welding, is to sort out the paperwork, as it was in Isle of Man for almost all it's life, though I do have the original bill of sale and UK reg number from the selling dealer in Aberdeen.

So, the new sills are in place, both inners and outers. All the essential rust is sorted but there still is a fair bit to do in the boot area by the jack. I have started stripping the car for preperation to paint, and have filled and sanded all the relevant areas. I just hope I get decent weather in the next week to shoot the paint. I am using cellulose with HVLP equipment, cheap stuff, but it has served me well in the past.

After buggering about and having painted the car three times (first in Thistle, then black now this)The car is staying like this till summer. I mixed up some really dark green and a slightly lighter shade for the bottom.
