Hi Guys..
I fancy a Merc and I've £20K-£25K to play with, but not sure which one..
What it must have is..
4 seats, good performance ( a V8?) reasonable size boot and as many toys as possible.
I had thought about getting a CL buts the cost of spares worries me, (a case of too many toys?)
Any one got an other suggestions?
TIA
Martin

Interesting
Also seen a CLS 500 for £20K
so does anyone want to contrast and compare A CL a CLS and a E55 AMG :-)
PS: Do any of these models has a ski hatch? (for Salmon rods)
If it helps I do about 12K miles a year (mainly the M25) and this will be replacing a Subaru Legacy 3.0R BSpec. Previous cars have included
Subaru Legacy Estate, Nice engine and handing, Plastic interior,
Porsche 928 > Lovely car but too small.
Lotus Esprit > Too fragile
Saab Carlson > good car.. but now?
XJS > A bit temperamental.
Alpha GTV-- Very fragile and temperamental. ( just like an Italian girl friend I had years ago)

Or maybe estate versions for your rods?

Not sure if the ski hatch was standard on the saloons, i know they were optional on the lower models..

I know the CLS and E-class are on the same platform so aren't very different in the basic driving experience or cost to run. The CLS comes exclusively with bigger engines so a bit more bling. A nice petrol Merc V8 is a pleasant unit and should match the old 928 for power. I think the 928 even had a Merc autobox. I bet it feels very similar.
Personally I would have an E500 because it's understated, subtle, rare and performant. A CLS looks a bit cooler but it's a bit sad for that very reason.
For that model E500/CLS500 you get 306hp in early models, but you'd probably find a later 5.5 version (still badged E500) which has 378bhp, I imagine that is interesting.. hounding E39 M5s in a dour looking silver Merc.
If you're feeling poor there's a 3.5 V6 with ~275bhp that might do the job.
The CL is built on the S-class platform so in a higher price bracket again. I am unfamiliar with the last model CL but I know the S class is nice in the right spec and drives well.
Now, I wouldn't recommend this particular car because it feels nasty and is in a bad colour combo with nasty wheels but it will give you an idea of what you could get and at your budget you could probably get a decent one from a dealer not a ropey badger like this chap (perhaps it's just bad photos)

For that you are equipped with a V12 and twin turbos so 500hp and good torque. Not a sensible car to pootle about it, I bet all bills are huge. But it would be the sort of car that you would remember owning (if possibly for the wrong reasons due to costs). It would impress people when you take them for a ride, and if you want to challenge people at work to a race on a dual carriageway they'd need a motorbike to do better, give or take, so that's always pleasant. I believe the CL is available with ABC active body control which makes it always corner flat and level - supposed to be very good even if it does not make it a sports car.
