SLK display set-up advice please

The missus has just bought a nice 2007 SLK280. One small issue is the multi-function display. According to the handbook, the "status line" can be programmed to show either outside temperature (which she wants it to display) or the speed. But for UK vehicles "this function is not available", and hers shows the speed in kph. Is that really how they come, or is it a fault? Because in the UK the speed in kph is rather less useful than the outside temperature, especially when it's close to freezing. Anyone know if there are any user (or dealer) work-arounds for this and for a couple of other functions that are "not available" in the UK?

That is working as designed. ie Stupidly. MB seem to think you have to display both MPH & KPH at the same time as a legal requirement, which it isn't, selectable is fine.

You need someone with a STAR machine to reset it to useful mode. A decent indy will do it (though a MB dealer will probably reset it to default).

I've had the same argument with Mercedes, the display is less useful as standard and defeatured compared to my old W202.

You need to speak to Richard at Command.co.uk he can sort it (has done on my C203 and my parents A Class). He possibly knows more about comand than Mercedes - at least in the UK.

I have the same problem here. Its highly annoying, but I guess you get used to it after a while.

I think to fix it you need to get someone with a STAR Diagnostics machine (?) to delete UK mode, but most dealers will refuse to do this.

Yes I tried to have a long argument about with my dealer when I collected my C class. They did actually try, but couldn't remove the UK Mode without a password. I got in touch with Richard via the Mercedes Forums and he sorted it, no problems and in minutes. He also enabled a couple of other useful features.

Not really ... There is only one 'm' in "COckpit MAnagement and Navigation Device" ....

Seriously though, I wasn't having a dig ... just pointing to the correct site rather than some recruitment agency ...

Thanks for suggesting we contact Richard. What were the "other useful features" you had enabled? If I get him to look at the car, I'd like to get it properly sorted.

I suppose it probably makes even more sense in german and I've seen a lot more contrived acronyms.

The extra features I can remember immediately (I've got used to them and take them for granted) were volume of fuel in the tank and auto folding mirrors on locking. There are other features that can be enabled depending on vehicle model and age, plus what features the vehicle has fitted. There were more features on my car's COMAND that could have been enabled but I didn't have the relevant hardware fitted (too tight for electric memory seats).

Richard (and Alfie) seem to know what can be done and have enabled everything possible on my cars.

Do you know if sorting the A Class display required the car to be connected to the diagnostics or is it a sequence of button pushes ??

The latest A-Class just like the rest of the MB range will need to be connected up to a STAR machine.
