Valeo Radiator
Discussion
Vehicles MANUFACTURED (not registered) from 2000 up to Sept 03 could have a Valeo rad.(They put in rads from two suppliers the other being Behr I believe).
I can find no evidence of a general recall having been issued for this problem, although I am aware of MB changing various rads.
I am not sure how one identifies the valeo rad.
It is advised to get documentary evidence of a radiator change rather than rely on word of mouth if buying privately. Don't take any chances - failure of the rad/and internal gearbox cooler will lunch the gearbox eventually and cost up to £4k to fix.
Get any proposed pre Sept 03 purchase inspected by Mercedes - its the only safe course of action.
MBOC advice seems to be go for a 04 or later model as many of the electrical/brake (SBC) issues will also have been ironed out.
Be aware that you cannot change rear bulbs on these. If a bulb fails you need a whole new tail light cluster at £25.00 and if the high level brake light fails - thats £60 !
