HI Chaps,
My throttle jammed open yesterday after one of the plastic ball joint things fell off the throttle linkage. Basically the plastic bit has worn out and I need another.

I phoned the dealer thinking it can't be that hard but they won't commit to it without me telling them the part number as there are 5 seperate linkages. I dare say they are all the same diameter, but apparently I can't just unscrew the plastic bit, I need the whole bar.

I seem to remember someone with a schematic link so that has posted before....any chance I can ask someone to post a link so I can have a look myself and literally tell the dealer which one.

The old girl is a W124 300d. (now called christine as the sod nearly killed me yesterday)

Thanks in advance.
Mike.

Oh, and it's the bar joining the throttle to linkage, left hand side of engine, to the left of the head as you look from the front of the car.

biggrin

Woah, these are a nightmare to get right, for starters that picture is for a LHD car so they'd have to order it from Germany.

There are a few different sizes too, I'd take the time to take it in and let them have a look at it and get it right first time. If it's just the ball socket you want you'll probably find they have a few on the shelf they've ordered incorrectly in the past and haven't shifted.

How true your words are biggrin
They ordered the wrong one, but by chance I took the old part in and am hoping they have matched it up right, they weren't very hopeful though.

Surely it can't be that hard nuts

I did ask about the balljoint thing, but unfortunately they won't do that. They were very apologetic but unfortunately I have a car sat on my drive that is very much needed, I even have to travel 30 odd miles to collect the bit.

Sometimes I despair!!

Well, I finally managed to get the new bit, but sadly the plastic end caps were too big. I presume the metal ball had worn too. So, I now need the bracket of which the upper part is the ball, where the plastic end cap connected to the rod goes. nuts

It's turning into a right nightmare this is. The dealer in fairness at cribbs in bristol are pretty good but as they don't see too many 124's in there any more the local hands on knowledge is sparce. What I need is an old boy to say "oh yes, you need this arm (bracket) that bolts on the back of the injector pump(i think)" It's part number bla bla bla..."

But sadly, at this time the parts dept are doing their best to find the right thing.

If anyone can come up with a part number I would be most appreciative.
As you look at a 300d r/h/drive engine, towards the top nearside there is a pump and at the top / rear of that a rod connects via a lever which goes over the top of the engine to another balljoint to the throttle cable assy.

nuts

Amazingly this is the only car I actually want to save. biggrin

Thanks once again in advance if anyone takes the challenge on.

Mike.

Mike,

Try Mervyn Wright, the parts guru at Mercedes (ex Jacksons) Poole. 01202 666330.

He is recommended by the MBOC as a classic parts specialist and often gets obscure bits for vehicles much older than yours.

Failing that this chap is advertising in the MBOC Gazette. He is breaking a W124 300D. His number is 07710 672986 or email retrodave111@aol.com - he might have the bit you need.

I will search the MBOC forums meantime

Best of luck !

Nigel

Nigel, thanks chum. I've just had a call from the dealer who have identified two potential bits, one in stock that they can have at bristol for tomorrow, the other one is incoming from Germany by monday. If neither of those fit, I'll ring the chappy from mboc. Thanks for your help. thumbup
Hope all is well.
Mike.

Nightmare, best thing to do is look for a part number stamped on any of the metal bracket bits. It'll be something like A 602 070 xxxxxx. Then they can find that part on the computer if you give them your chassis number and work back from it. They'll be able to fax you a picture if you ask them nicely - after all they will be making a good 40p profit out of you !

Well................................biggrin

At a loss to what part was needed I took the old bag into the Merc dealership for them to have a look at the particular part required. The parts chap scratched his head and wandered off to get a chap from the workshop.

Out pops 'steve' who was the senior mechanic who has worked for them for millions of years.

Initial reaction "Bloody great these things were - shame they aren't like it now"
So, I showed him the part, told him it was to do with the throttle jamming open etc etc to which he answered that the bit that was loose was absolutely nothing to do with the throttle at all. It was a link that engaged when the cruise control was on and at a particular speed.

"Oh grumpy" was my answer, "But the cruise control hasn't worked for about 15 years"

It would appear that my diagnosis was completely wrong. banghead

So I asked what the problem was, he had a look and basically told me that the joints and mechanisms had 400,000 miles worth of gunk all over them which stiffened them and ultimately didn't spring back efficiently.

Cure - big steamwash, followed by WD40 all over the various balljoints and hey presto, it's now as smooth as a baby's bum.

Steve also said it may be worth whacking the cruise control actuator with a big hammer biggrin as the motor may have jammed, unlikely to make it work, but you never know.

So, A completely inefficient diagnosis and would appear that two things happened at once, unlikely but it did!

While Steve was there, he was generally poking around as he seemed to have a genuine liking for the car, I asked him if it seemed to be in good health. His reply was that in his opinion, after looking and listening to it, it would probably do another 400,000 miles easily biggrin

"None of these shiny things on the forecourt would do that"

Bargain, fixed, and free.
thumbup to the dealer.

Nice ! We used to have a 'Steve' at the dealership I was at. If we didn't have a part for an old clunker, he'd have one in the bottom of his toolbox.
