Replacement only. Simple job so I'm told, you can find it here:

(its in there somewhere).

Okay.... Purchased crankshaft position sensor £40 and on saturday set about replacement... all done within around 1/2 hour, very easy and staightforward also changed the oil , oil filter , air filter and fuel filter. Drove home perfectly, 2nd journey however the gremlins have returned. The engine simply cuts out. there is no prior warning it makes no difference whether the car is under acceleration or just on tickover, high revs or low, and then it will not re start. leave it a while and then it starts and runs perfectly again. The ignition stays on, it's just the engine that stops. and then upon trying to re-start the car the little led red and green flashers flash on the interior mirror. it will not start while the led's are flashing. wait for them to stop 30secs to a minute and then it will start perfectly. it's as if it just switches off. could it be ecu of injector pump? What is the K40 relay. It could be the vacuum cut off but all the vacuum system works well. Any idea's???
Right I think you should ask here now:

It sounds like an immobiliser problem (mine doesn't have the red-green lights).
The K40 relay I believe is a largeish component in the fusebox/ECU. There are many posts on the internet with the same problem, just google 'k40 relay' to find them. The good news is that if you're handy with a soldering iron they can be repaired rather than replaced, as its just dry joints/cracked joints.
The thing about diesels is that hardly anything can stop the engine from running, so you should be able to stop the fault fairly easily, its only a short list.
