c36 noise from the fan belt somewhere?
Discussion
Hi all
just changed the water pump and found the old one was ruff but not the cause of the noise. so never wasted my time thankfully.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing the wyne.
I have been told it might be the fan belt tensioner and provisional have the car booked in to have it replaced but if anyone else has any idea or have had the same problem please help...
I dont think its the power steering pump as that is working fine and the noise is coming from just below it.

Coincidentally only yesterday, my wife has a Mk4 Golf, sounded terrible, and i thought was the power steering pump, booked into garage for a "look/see" turned out it was the belt tensioner, new tensioner and belt fitted, sounds like it should now.just changed the water pump and found the old one was ruff but not the cause of the noise. so never wasted my time thankfully.

Its fixed!!!
Thank god as the noice was doing my head in.
If anyone else has the same problem check the fan belt tensioner first as it can be easily mistaken for the water pump or power steering pump as vibrations will pass straight up through them.
Anyway thats everything fixed prior to my trip to the nurburgring!!!
Cant wait.
Cheers all.

Stu , good to hear you`ve resolved it . I`ve just started running my C36 after a winter break and had forgotton how good it is . Was the tensioner an expensive job and dod you change the belt at the same time ?
Let me know how the car performs at the `ring ; I intend to go when family and work commitments allow (sometime in the next 10 years!)

The tensioner cost £40 and the job was done for £50 by two friends that work for mercedes.
They made it look easy, took them about 30mins.
fan out and then just unhooked the fan belt removed the tensioner and replaced ( replacement was slightly bigger, but as its self adjusting all was good)
The c36 is great, nice and quite now cant wait to get to the ring, took it on knockhill and the handling was very good. mine has lsd which made corecting drifts very easy( no traction control )
Having whatched the tensioner being changed if you are good with a spanner I would give it go, I will if theres a next time.
ps. cant believe you were going to sell yours

I`m a serial car buyer , but I`ve realised that I`m not bored with the C36 yet. To be honest , I could spend an awful lot of money and end up with an inferior car - I need four seats and I like the practicality but I cant really think I`d need anything which is any faster (except perhaps a C55 when they reach sensible money) .
