E320 fuel consumption
Discussion
I Have a one year old E320 saloon It's due service A soon and when I take it in I am wondering wether or not to complain about what I would regard as relatively poor fuel consumption. I have a daily commute of about 5 miles each way but I consistently manage only 25mpg for this trip. I don't drive like a loon and only need to boot it at one particular junction. Traffic isn't bad and roads vary between 30-40mph.
On motorway trips I have seen a return of 35mpg but can't really go above 70mph to get this. So what do you people think? Is this about right or should I have a moan?
Thanks Simon

So what type of route is your 5 mile mile commute then? If it's a lot of stopping and starting I would say that 25mpg is quite acceptable especially if you're booting it on one particular junction..
If the traffic lights are against me I need to stop about every mile.I would say it's about normal. I have an E320 and my daily commute is 7 miles each way. There is only a small amount of stop start work but I have never seen my consumption better than 20 mpg for these journeys. My motorway best is 31 but the average speed is normally a bit higher than yours.

Thats made me feel better. I did a 100 mile round trip yesterday and managed 37.5mpg. I guess If you're going to have a big saloon that hits 60 in under 7 seconds and can pull like a train....I have an E320cdi (the straight-six, 204bhp and 5-speed box). On my 65-mile round-trip daily commute I get an average of about 35mpg. It's maybe 30 miles b-roads, 25 miles of a-roads and 10 miles of town driving (but not much traffic). The a and b roads are genrally driven "briskly" (the 32.5 mile drive takes about 40 minutes). On longer motorway slogs it's usually about 40 and if I'm ragging it it's usualyl closer to 30. Still not bad for a big heavy saloon which will crack 140 with relative ease...
