Rust on S class

I have a 99 S class Mercedes with 80,000 miles.
I have driven Mercs for a while, I generally buy one with less than 40k miles on it and then change when I get upto around 120k.
This car is now rusting up, I was surprised by this as my other Mercs have never suffered from this as a problem.
I am about to get the car repaired and resprayed, but whilst talking to my local garage owner, he told me that this was a common problem with this specific car and that Mercedes had previously carried out rust repairs free of charge.
This sounds very unlikely to me, but I am sure one of you can confirm if there is any chance that Mercedes will accept that this is their problem?

Yes sadly it is very common but in theory if you have Mercedes main dealer history done at the correct intervals and have had no paintwork done (i.e. the car is all original) then your cars "mobilo life" 30 year "warranty" (introduced on that generation S-Class and on all 98> cars) will be valid and this covers corrosion. In the past I've had mixed responses claiming on this for work but is worth exploring. They will also check the history of the car and the bodyshop manager will come out with a paint depth guage to check if it is factory paint before making a recommendation to claim or not from Mercedes HQ for costs to put the car right.
I was chatting with my Merc specialist about rust on newer cars, and their 30 year warranty.
Apparently the 30 years only covers major structural areas, which should never rust in that time, but doesn't cover the body panels. That's subject to only an 8 year warranty. It's quite cleverly worded, so most people just assume the 30 year warranty covers everything.
I was inquiring with regards to the W210 E-Class, so I don't know if it's different for the W220 S-Class, but believe it's the same. If I've been misinformed, then can someone correct me, as this is something I'd like to know more about, too

The rust repairs are all done as "goodwill" rather than under Mobilo, as it's usually suraface rust and Mobilo is a perforation warranty.
There are reports of people having it done who don't have full MB service history, but if it hasn't been near a dealer in years then I guess they might say they could have spotted it earlier.
Worth a try, I guess. Some dealers are much more helpful than others, but the claims all go to a central point at MB UK for a decision.
