So, needed 4 new tyres for my merc and had been shopping around - costs were all around £140-£150/tyre. Coincidently the power steering system decided it didn't like the taste of it's current fluid and shat it all over the road necessitating a wee trip to the Merc Dealer. But here's the shocker: The dealer called and mentioned that I needed new tyres, said they had a rep onsite who could do them fited/balanced/new valves for £25/tyre cheaper than anywhere I can find for the brand/model I wanted. ....cheaper tyres, no more phone calls, no waiting around some freezing cold tyre fitters, car delivered back to the door..... Result!

Anyway, blew my misconceptions out of the water and thought I'd mention it on here!

It's good to hear that you got a good result. The other side of the coin is when your car is in for routine service and you get a call saying your tyres are close to the legal limit. You ask what they are and are told under 2mm front and 3mm back - "do you want them changed" as the dealer has an agent on site. You say no and when you get the service statement it shows all have 3mm all round...

Or you could have the experience I had, put my car in for first 'A' service to main dealer, report said tyres half worn all round, got a rear puncture 1 week later and when I took the wheel off the 2 rear tyres were on the minimum tread indicator, they hadn't even checked the tyres when the car was in for a service and missed out on the opportunity to sell me tyres, as well as handing my car back with near illegal tyres. Needless to say i didn't go back to them for the required tyres!!

The onus is on you to check your tyre tread depths,at all times, i doubt you could place a claim on the dealer if you had an accident/incident and the low tread was the cause.

True, but if they give me a written report saying I have 6mm of tread at say 14k miles, and 1 week and 100 miles later the tyres somehow have such a low tread depth as to be illegal I think I'd at least have a claim for the cost of my service back - if you got your car back from a service, drove to the end of the road to find the engine had no oil in it at all do you think they'd say the onus is on you to check your car is sufficiently topped up with oil at all times, or would they be negligent for not carrying out the service to manufacturer's specifications (which includes checking tyre condition I believe). Off topic I know but if you're paying for something to be checked and reported on correctly, then you expect that to happen and they have duty to fulfil their end of the bargain.
