Diesel cutting out?

Hi
Having a problem with my 1997 W210.E300d Auto(apart from the rust) the car runs perfectly , then without any prior warning simply cuts out, this has no prior warning, will not re-start immidiately but left for a minute will then re-start and run perfectly... Any ideas?

When my old Shogun did this it was fuel metering unit and pump problem -expensive!!!!!
